fear never occurred to him. 虽然我在想那是否是出于父亲那时本身的天真,不知道害怕,还是完全信任祖父的力量而从不知害怕的滋味,“难以想象!”父亲讲到这时惊叹道:“那时才五岁且没受一点伤。”
(5)In English the adverbial modifier of the manner can usually be put at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the sentence. When translating we should put it before the predicate or at the b eginning of the sentence, sometimes it is placed after the predicate to emphasize the manner but the word“得”should be added before it. For instance, Then he’d raise his shirt quickly, and we’d see the brutish pucker circling his waist. 接着他很快掀开了衬衫,我们便看到了他腰部起皱疤的一圈。
(6 )The adverbial modifier of extent in English can be put before, in the middle or after the predicate. It can also be put before the adjective. While translating , we often put it before the adjective. For example: My father had never gone in for gimmicks as a hunter…作为一位猎手父亲从不用复杂的工具。…
6. Inversion of the word order of the addresses, designations and the adverbials.
The rules of inversion can be consulted the natural order in addresses, designations and the natural order of adverbials, which are discussed above.
7. Inversion of the independent component.
In English sentences there are various independent components, such as the interjection, exclamation and address. When we translate them we don't need to rearrange the word order. For example, "Hell, a good shot like you must have hit him,” he said.“造孽!像你这样的好射手一定能打中它的。”他说道。
Conclusion
Through discussing the natural word order in English and Chinese sentences, the convention of expression in English and in Chinese, concerning the rules of inversion in the process of translation, we find that understanding inversion clearly can avoid the confusion of meaning, to ensure clarity of the version. It would be easier for us to translate English into Chinese if we master these rules. Appropriate application of these rules would make the version not only faithful to the original but conforming to the convention of expression in Chinese.
