1.1 Research Background

Wuxia novels have been popular among the Chinese-speaking circle around theworld.It is a splendid treasure in Chinese literature history.As cultural exchangesbetween China and other countries has been increasing,many great Chinese novelshave attracted the attention of foreign readers,among which include Jin Yong’s Wuxianovels.Wuxia novels written by Jin Yong are regarded as great Wuxia novels inmodern times.The fiction is famous for various martial arts or kungfu andXia/chivalrous spirit.Surprised by its great Chinese culture hidden in the fiction,Chinese-speaking people all over the world,especially those people in Asia regard itas an encyclopedia of Chinese culture.In recent years,some films based on Wuxia orkungfu like Hidden Dragon(《卧虎藏龙》)and Hero(《英雄》)have caught theattention of Western film audiences.Therefore,kungfu-based culture has graduallyentered Chinese kungfu lovers’hearts.Jin Yong’s Wuxia novels,which contain typesof Chinese kungfu,Jianghu,friendship,various Chinese traditional cultures,and Xiaspirit,etc.,can be a good carrier to spread Chinese culture overseas.

However,due to cultural differences between China and the West,Englishversions of Jin Yong’s Wuxia fiction have low acceptability in the English-speakingcircle.To figure out the reason,the author chose Shu Jian En Chou Lu to analyze itsEnglish version.Shu Jian En Chou Lu encompasses rich Chinese culture,such askungfu,types of weapons,history,and traditional Chinese philosophy,etc.Amongthem,Wuxia culture is of great importance and waits for foreign readers to explore.Featuring traditional Chinese culture,Wuxia culture is the essence of Wuxia novelsand attracts readers.One of the important channels to spread Chinese literature andculture is to spread Wuxia culture because now it is most attractive to foreign readers.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance

“Wu”and“Xia”are the core and soul of Wuxia novels,and translation related tothem is the most important and difficult point.As one of the representatives of JinYong’s Wuxia novels,Shu Jian En Chou Lu is a typical Wuxia novel and full of richChinese cultural information.Due to the different cultural backgrounds betweenChina and the West,many target language readers cannot understand the charms ofWuxia fiction.Graham encountered many obstacles in the process of translating,thatis,how to interpret and spread unique Chinese Wuxia culture to target readers,so hemade a lot of efforts in translation to convey the essence of martial arts novels.
