Chapter One Task Description
1.1 Background of the Interpreting Tasks
This consecutive interpreting practice report mainly focuses on the interpreter’sinvolvement in interpreting activities from December 30,2022,to February 28,2023,spanning a duration of two months.It provides a comprehensive analysis andreflection on the on-site interpreting practice conducted during this period.The choiceof this topic is grounded in two main aspects.
Firstly,this interpreting practice activity has significant reference value.Initially,the interpreter was engaged in interpreting the content of Educational courses and providing accompanying interpreting for a doctoral program in education,which isdesigned for Chinese teachers with rich teaching practice to further their studiesabroad and boost their degree.The implementation of this interpreting project canoffer assistance and support to scholars aspiring to obtain a Ph.D.degree in educationabroad.Due to the Covid-19 pandemic,this program had been conducted solelyonline before.However,this interpreting assignment marks the first instance ofcarrying out on-site interpreting practice at the University of Baguio.As a result,ithas remarkable reference value and significance.
Secondly,for the interpreter personally,this interpreting task represented herinaugural experience of conducting on-site interpreting practice abroad.Therefore,thestudy of the interpreting problems,corresponding strategies,and improvement tacticsdemonstrated by the interpreter in this practice offers considerable reference value.Meanwhile,the interpreter’s practical experience in consecutive interpreting duringthis endeavor will provide valuable insights for future interpreters engaging in similartasks.
1.2 Features of the Interpreting Tasks
Course interpreting tasks possess distinct characteristics in various aspects,setting them apart from other types of interpreting.
Firstly,course interpreting not only demands the accurate conveyance of thespeaker’s linguistic content but also necessitates the precise transformation ofknowledge and educational concepts into the target language,ensuring that studentscan comprehend and absorb course content in a different linguistic environment.Thisrequires interpreters to possess a profound understanding of the subject matter,enabling them to effectively convey specialized terminology and concepts within thefield of education.Secondly,course interpreting places a stronger emphasis oncultural adaptation and localization.Educational courses are often closely tied to localculture,societal contexts,and teaching methodologies.Therefore,during interpreting,consideration must be given to the cultural differences of the intended audience,ensuring that course content retains suitable comprehensibility and adaptability acrossdiverse cultural environments.Moreover,course interpreting demands thatinterpreters exhibit enhanced flexibility when literal interpreting may fail to fullyconvey the target content from the source text.
All in all,the interpreter must employ appropriate interpreting strategies basedon the expression norms of the target language,guaranteeing that the interpretedcurriculum maintains educational significance and value.
