Chapter One Task Description and Translation Process

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

The source text authors are from the Institute for Mental Health,the University ofBirmingham,and other related institutions.It was published in the Journal of Social Science&Medical and was available online to readers on December 21,2022.The textual part of thesource text is 10,883 words.Through trial translation,the author learns that it will be translatedinto about more than 20,000 Chinese words.Meanwhile,its content is readable,with moderatelanguage difficulty,and suitable length as the translation material for a translation practicereport.Therefore,the author chooses this material to translate and writes a practice report basedon it.

Nowadays,our nation pays more attention to youth mental health,also increasinglyChinese readers hope to learn about the content which related to the mental health and researchachievements from other countries or regions,thus it has certain signification in translating thistext.It can not only provide readable Chinese material to the Chinese reader who is interestedin this field but also provide parallel text for translation in the field of academic text aboutmental health.

According to the condition of the source text and the planning of the author,a month willbe given to translating this source text for the first time,and half of a month will be given forthe second and third time translation.Then the author writes a practice report based on the deepunderstanding and summary of the source text.

1.2 Translation Process

The whole process of translation practice cannot be accomplished in one stroke.To ensurethe readability and completeness of the translation,when developing the practice plan,the author divides the translation process into pre-translation,mid-translation,and post-translation.Meanwhile,the author clarifies the specific work of each part,which can support the smoothimplementation of the entire translation practice.

1.2.1 Pre-translation

Before translation,the first thing the author does is spend a lot of time reading the sourcetext.To get a basic understanding of the source text,it is not enough to skim the text only once,especially since this text selected for this practice includes lots of terms and knowledge inprofessional fields.So at first,the author conducts an intensive reading of the source text.Thereafter,because key points of this practical task are to accurately convey the content of thesource text and achieve a smooth conversation between English and Chinese.Therefore,theauthor first searches some parallel texts online.In translation studies and lexicography,paralleltexts refer to different texts that are linguistically independent but are produced in the same(orsimilar)situation and are used to test how different languages express the same factual material(Du Xiaojun,2013:46).To translate closely to the expression habits of the target language,theauthor searches and reads lots of texts related to mental health and urbanization in the targetlanguage before translation.

Chapter Two Source Text Analysis

2.1 Stylistic Features
