1. The literary background of two poets
1.1 The background of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849), a poet of genius who was born in Nineteenth-century America. Both Poe’s parents had been actors and had died by the time he was three. His bad relationship with his foster father was one of many unhappinesses in his brief life. It resulted in his short life of poverty, anxiety, and fantastic tragedy. He achieved so great a literary success during his lifetime. His fiction belongs to the Southern, rather than the New England, writing tradition. It is far more romantic in language and imagery. France has held him among the greatest poets, and one century and half after his death he still stands among the most popular of American authors.
1.2 The background of Meng Jiao
Meng Jiao(751-814), was a native of Huzhou-Wukang(present-day Deqing Country, Zhejiang Province) of Tang Dynasty. His father once served as a Xiaowei but died at the place of his service in the prince of his life. Meng’s wife passed away early and his three sons all died young. So, his whole life was one of poverty and ill-fate. He tried the civil examination two times but failed in both, and not until 796 did he succeed in obtaining the jinshi grade. Being upright, proud and aloof, he wrote poems that are mostly concerned with the inconsistency of human relationships, sufferings among the commoners, and his personal misfortunes. His feelings are genuinely sincere, and stir people’s hearts. His language seeks rare oddity of his own invention, forming an austere slender style of ancient taste. He merited the praise of Han Yu; so later generations bracketed the two together as “Han Meng”.
2. Similarities of the creation between Edgar Allan Poe and Meng Jiao
The purpose of writing this paper is to analyze the similarities and dissimilarities of the creation of Poe and Meng Jiao according the comparison. By investigating the inverse mentality and the orientation of aesthetic judgment, we can find Poe and Meng Jiao share certain similarities in their creative mentality.
2.1 The inverse mentality embodies the attitude of Death and Birth
