Rather, a good poem should create in the reader a feeling of gentle sadness. In Poe’s opinion, beauty is the sole legitimate province of the poem, and melancholy is thus the most legitimate of all the poetical tones. According to the universa l understanding of mankind, death is the most melancholy. In the Review of Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales(1840), Poe put forward that it must choose an appropriate topic. He thought, the death, of a beautiful woman was, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world. In his works of Groan in Poor(《寒地百姓吟》), Meng Jiao describes the miserable condition and people in an impasse by using a unique metaphor and bizarre imagery. And the death of beautiful woman and the wither of lotus are both sorrowful and depressing. The pursue of beauty is the main melody of human life. Consequently, mankind always wish beauty dynamic forever. They Wistful for the elapse of spring, and they are sad for the wither of flowers. Beautiful Annabel died, but the death of beauty left people infinite melancholy and grievous. In Quintessence of Chinese quatrain, Liu Yongji ap
