author here rarely shows the actual object of horror. Rather, the reader must use his imagination. In The Masque of the Red Death(1842), Poe used the dancing of the Red Death to symbolize death: the rampageousness of "red death" out of imperial palace, bizarre and motley in the castle, the utmost crazy of make-up party, and bizarre appearance of the masks, " flame go through the blood red glass window, shine on the pitch-black heavy curtain, unparalleled ghastly", all the dancing people deathly pale and dancing insanely in the dim. In the crowd a figure which wore a mask of "red death" and shroud changed into a piece of cloth and a mask. What kind of panic and shock given to people?
To see another work of Poe - The Conqueror Worm(1843), he took the terrible and monstrous reptile as beauty to chant. It gave people dreadful imagination that life was a tragedy and the people who made the tragedy was "a crowd of clown who dressed up as God".
On the other hand, Meng Jiao also described lots of unpleasant things in his poems, such as "sick horse", "hungry dog", "dried bones". In order to stimulate people's hearing, vision and feeling by using ugly image, he wrote " peculiar birds", "dried plants", "ancient grave", " dried coffin", " alone bones", "ancient house", "dried Tong" and so on. The poet induced people to engender an unusual artistic feeling by using all kinds of ugliness, and to achieve a result of aesthetic judgment. It displays poet's artistic rule of taking ugliness as beauty, and it has artistic dialectics. At last, let us see two poems of Meng Jiao:
戏 答 Jest[9]
芙蓉初出水,菡萏露中花。
风吹着枯木,无奈值空槎。
Lotus come out of water only a short while ago,
As if flowers in the dew.
Wind blowing the dried timber,
Have no alternative but to become raft voidly.
古别曲 Song of leave[10]
荒郊烟苍莽,旷野风凄切。
处处得相随,人那不如月。
Smoke is boundless in deserted outskirts,
Wind is grievous in wilderness.
If followed by someone everywhere,
It would be better to the moon.
3. Disimilarities of the creation between Edgar Allan Poe and Meng Jiao
There are of course, other similarities between Poe and Meng Jiao, such as the use of images. However, having examined the main similarities- the attitude on death and aliveness, language, and the orientation of aesthetic judgment, we shall overlook those devices and take a look at the main differences between the two poets.
3.1 The feature-symbol is used in Poe's works
First and foremost, symbol[11] is used widely in Poe's poems. Before reading his works, let us first see the word "symbol". "symbol" is often used sloppily and sometimes pretentiously, but properly used the term suggests one of the most basic things about poems- their ability to get beyond what words signify and make larger claims about meanings in the verbal world. All words go beyond themselves. They are not simply a collection of sounds: they signify something beyond their sounds, oftenthings or actions or ideas.
A symbol is, put simply, something that stands for something else. In common usage a prison is a symbol of confinement, constriction, and loss of freedom, and in specialized traditional usage a cross may symbolize oppression, cruelty, suffering, death, or the intersection of two separate things, traditions, or ideas. In a very literal sense, words themselves are all symbols, but symbols in poetry are said to be those w
