Amplification is a translation technique that adds necessary words in the target text aftergiving equivalents of the original expressions so as to compensate for the semantic losses atext suffers from when it is translated,to clarify unfamiliar points,or to make the translationidiomatic and grammatical(Ke,1991:25).Once used during translation,it will help readersof the target language comprehend the word meaning just as source language readers do(Xia,2006:203).This part focuses on how the author supplements the senses lost of some originalwords in translation and acquaints Chinese readers with new knowledge by adopting thetechnique of amplification.

5.1 Gains from the Translation Project

This report is written based on the author’s own translation of“THE DIGITALSINOSPHERE(2020):making way for a new universal”,chapter 7 in the book of nonfictionnamed Kingdom of Characters:The Language Revolution That Made China Modern underthe guidance of translation compensation theory by Xia Tingde.Almost in every translation,translators will be faced with translation loss problems,and how to deal with them is a keyelement in producing a good translation.According to the theory of translation compensationby Xia Tingde,the author analyzes the translation losses she encountered during her practiceat the linguistic and aesthetic levels and different translation techniques are elaborated on ineach example to show the reader how the author mitigated the losses.

Once translation loss occurs at the linguistic level,various compensation strategies canbe adopted in lexical and grammatical operations.At the lexical level,amplification,paraphrase,specification and generalization,and annotation out text are usable techniques tosolve problems in the target text,such as loss of meaning,translationnese caused by literaltranslation,etc.At the grammatical level,amplification,conversion and division are effectivetechniques to compensate for losses when the author tries to reproduce the grammaticalfunction in a sentence of some word,or translate sentences with passive voice and complex orcompound sentences.

For translation loss at the aesthetic level,the author gives play to the advantages of thetarget language,replacing the original aesthetic form in the source text with a new one in thetarget text without sacrificing the aesthetic function or conveying the original informationwith the aesthetic form sacrificed.After all,it is more important to guarantee that the contentof the source text which is from a book of nonfiction is delivered without error if a translationwhere the original aesthetic form and word meaning are both reproduced in the targetlanguage cannot be produced.
