In the book,the seven chapters included can be divided into two parts,one on how to“reform”the character-based script and make it more accessible to the people so as to endilliteracy and facilitate communication beyond regional borders in the country,the other onhow to make the script pressed into service for modern technologies successfully in order tomake communication beyond national borders more efficient.For the seventh chapter,thewhole narration deals with the encoding of Chinese characters where key figures are quotedand historic events detailed,which,according to Newmark’s theory on text typology,can beclassified as an informative and partly expressive text.

Chapter 2 Description of Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation Preparation

Full preparation for translation is essential if the translator desires to produce works ofhigh quality in limited time,especially when he or she is faced with some source textcontaining information beyond him or her.The preparations the author makes includereferring to parallel texts,choosing translation tools and determining the translation theory.

(1)Reference to parallel texts.Many historic events and crucial figures that prove to beunfamiliar to the author are contained in the source text.To deepen her understanding of thefigures who lived and the events which took place at a certain time in history,the author looksup such entries as of“支秉彝”,“林语堂”,“中日韩越统一表意文字”,“master narrative”and“纪实文学”on Baidu Baike,Wikipedia,Cihai respectively,and journals on Chinese characterencoding are referred to which include but are not limited to Review and Prospect of ChineseCharacter Encoding and Unified Coding of Chinese Characters in Languages of Chinese,Japanese and Korean,and Spreading of Chinese Character Culture.Additionally,the authoralso consults some reports on translation guided by Translation Compensation Theory(ChenZaitian’s and Yin Yue’s,listed in the bibliography)for the proper arrangements of informationin her own report.

(2)Selection of translation tools.Before translation,the translation tools the authorthinks she may use are Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,Collins EnglishDictionary and Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary.In addition,somemachine translation services(Baidu Translation,Youdao Translation,Google Translation,etc)may also be needed when the author is translating terms and such proper nouns as names ofconferences,persons and institutes as well as organizations.

2.2 In-translation Process

After the preparations above made,the author sets about translating the seventh chapterof Kingdom of Characters in July 2022.

To begin with,the author encounters different expressions,such as proper nouns andtechnical words,beyond her grasp either for her lack of related background knowledge or forher limited vocabulary.To have a better understanding of those unfamiliar chunks,the authorturns to dictionaries,parallel texts and books or reports on differences between Chinese andEnglish for more information.In this way,the author manages to translate those wordscorrectly.
