5.1 Major Findings of the Thesis

With the guidance of CDA,this thesis adopts Fairclough’s three-dimensional modeland takes Qian Gu Wen Ren Xia Ke Meng and its English translation The Development ofChinese Martial Arts Fiction:A History of Wuxia Literature as an example to probe thediscrepancies between the original and the translation from three aspects of textual analysis,discursive practice analysis and social practice analysis,attempting to discover the cause andeffects of discrepancies in translation and testify the value of the application of CDA inacademic translation.The findings are drawing follow:

Firstly,a comparative analysis of source texts and target texts indicates that there arediscrepancies in linguistic structure and intertextual reference in the process of translation.Through textual analysis,it is found that the translator has different descriptions andexpression with different positions or tendencies towards the same thing,which is mainlyreflected in the lexical choice and deformation;in addition,the translator’s different choicesof linguistic processes also deviate from the original to a certain extent.At the level ofdiscursive practice analysis,intertextuality is the main concern.In terms of manifestintertextuality,the translator is confined to the characteristics of English academic discourseand the influence of cultural differences between Chinese and Western cultures,adoptingliteral translation to convert the culturally rich texts,classics,martial arts novels and poemsof the original into standardized and bland English.The outcome is that the vivid image ofthe original is omitted in the target language culture.In terms of constitutive intertextuality,the translator through the omission of paratexts,erosion of Chinese academic style markersand the shift of tone to conform to the academic norms of English,resulting in the loss ofChinese academic style.
