It was in 1900s that the first translation research has been conducted from theperspective of CDA.In The Translator as Communicator,Hatim and Mason(1997)employed Halliday’s“Modality”and“Transitivity”to conduct a discourse analysis on thetranslated texts which emphasize ideational and interpersonal functions by changing“Modality”and“Transitivity”in the source and target texts.They deepened the discussionon the restriction of ideology in the translation process in this work,and tended to believethat it is a reciprocal influence between ideology and translation process.However,due to alack of deeper studies,their research was still limited to text-level superficial discrepancies.

4.1 Textual Analysis

Embedded ideological meanings are interesting for Translation Studies,firstly becauseideologies of societies and cultures are different,and secondly because thelexico-grammatical realisation of ideology is likely to vary different language.This sectionis a linguistic analysis of the content and form of the text,with the use of Halliday’ssystemic functional grammar,depicting the linguistic features of the translation in threedimensions:classification,transformation,and transitivity.

4.1.1 Classification

Classification refers to the use of language to give order to the external world(Fowleret al,1979:210).The classification system of a discourse refers to the naming anddescription of characters and events in the discourse,which is mainly realized through thechoice of vocabulary.However,language is by no means an objective tool of classification,and the labels people apply to things do not necessarily reflect their inherent characteristics,but are affected by people’s cognitive level and thoughts and feelings,i.e.,differentperceptions of things and experiences lead to different principles of classification.
