摘要:作者以大量经贸契约条款为例并根据多年从事经贸契约翻译的经验 ,较为全面和详细地分析和阐述了经贸契约中日期、 金额和数字的常见用法和译法。这不仅对正确翻译契约中的日期、 金额和数字有帮助 ,而且对正确理解和翻译经贸契约也是大有裨益的。
Abstract　The author has given an extensive and in- depth analysis and expatiation upon the common usage and translation of the dates ,amount and numbers (figures) in the economic and trade contracts by making use of numerous examples of such contract clauses and the experience of the writer’ s long engagement in such translation. This will not only be conducive to the correct translation of the dates ,amount and numbers (figures) in the economic and trade contracts but also improve the understanding and translation of business contracts as a whole.

　　无论是在经贸契约的汉译英或英译汉中 ,准确翻译其条款中日期、 金额和数字都很重要 ,稍有不慎 ,便可能酿成大错。如我们英译经贸契约中的交货条款( the Delivery Clause)时 ,就应避免使用模棱两可的表示转运时间的用语。例如:“立即 (随即) 装运”( Immediate ship2ment) , “即期装运” ( Prompt shipment ) , “已备装运”( Ready shipment ) ,“尽速 (快) 装运”( shipment as soon as possible ) ,“有船即装”(shipment by the first available steamer)“首次机会即装” ( shipment by the first opportunity)等。如果我们把这样模棱两可的术语写进合同的装运条款中 ,那就很可能导致卖方钻合同文字的空子 ,迟迟不肯交货 ,从而引起合同双方的争议。再例如:Any claim by buyer ,except forlatent defect s ,shall be made in writing as soon aspracticable af ter arrival of the merchandise at thefinal destination specified herein.买方索赔必须在货到合同规定之目的港后尽早提出 ,但有关货物潜在的瑕疵除外。本合同条款未提出索赔的具体时间 ,只规定了一个大概的时间 ,我们应尽量在合同中避免使用这样含糊不清的字眼 ,as soon as practicable ,究竟指多早 ,人们只能猜测而已。
     1 合同中日期的表达与翻译     准确翻译合同条款中日期或时间的关键在于正确选择数词与介词的搭配。如介词或介词短语选用得当 ,便可避免歧义的产生。
     1.1 在 …… 之内 ,在一段时间之内 
     1.1.1 用 within 来翻译如今我们产品的需求量很大 ,以至我们无法在贵方规定的时间内装运。There is such a large demand for our prod2uct s now that we cannot make shipment withinthe time you specified.买方应在货到目的港 30 天内向卖方提交索赔通知。Buyer must give seller writ ten notice of anyclaim within thirty ( 30) days of arrival of thegoods at port of destination.本合同下的所有货物应在九月上旬交货。All the merchandise under the cont ract shallbe delivered within the first ten days of Septem2ber .九月中旬装运。Shipment within the second ( middle ) tendays of September .九月下旬装运。Shipment within the last ten days ofSeptember .10 月下旬至 11 月上旬装运。Shipment within the last eleven- day periodof October and the first ten- day period ofNovember .在翻译某月上旬、 中旬或下旬这些日期时 ,(如五月)千万不要把上旬译为: early May ,把中旬译为: the middle May ,把下旬译为: lateMay。这种译法或写法在一般文体中可以用 ,但在作为法律文件的经贸契约中应避免 ,因为它们欠准确。在翻译下旬时如遇大月 ,如七月应译为: the last eleven days of J uly 或 the lasteleven- day period of J uly.
    1.1.2 用 within. . . af ter来翻译买方就本合同提出的任何索赔 ,都必须在货物到达提单所载目的地后 30 天内 ,以电报向卖方提出。Any claim by the buyer of whatever naturearising under this cont ract shall be made by cablewithin thirty (30) days af ter arrival of the mer2chandise at the destination stipulated in the billof lading.收到信用证 45 天内装运。Shipment within forty-five (45) days af terreceipt of let ter of credit .
