Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Elizabeth Jolley and The Newspaper of Claremont Street

Elizabeth Jolley(4 June 1923–13 February 2007)whose original name in full isMonica Elizabeth Knight,is an English-born writer,settled in Western Australia in thelate 1950s.She was born in Birmingham,the industrial midlands of England.As thedaughter of an English father and an Austrian mother,both her father and her motherwere teachers.Elizabeth Jolley attended schools in Strasburg,Paris and Hamburg,aswell as a Quaker boarding school in Banbury,England.She was trained as a nurse inLondon.While,in 1959,her husband Leonard Jolley was appointed Chief Librarianof the Reid Library at The University of Western Australia,she followed her husbandto Western Australia with three children.During that time,she made several attemptsto publish manuscripts she wrote.She didn’t succeed until the year of 1976 that shejust managed to publish her first collection of short stories—The Five Acre Virgin andOther Stories,while she was 53 years old at that time.Nothing is more appropriate todescribe her than“being a late bloomer”.As one of Australia’s most defining authors,Elizabeth Jolley writes 15 novels and four short story collections during herdistinguished career.And she wins most of the major Australian literary prizes whichinclude the Miles Franklin Award—the highest award in Australian literature and theAge Book of the Year Award.She is awarded four honorary doctorates and receivesthe Order of Australia.She is also named one of Australia’s living treasures.

“Jolley’s childhood had a profound influence on her thematic concerns as awriter”(Liu 1).In fact,Jolley did not officially enter school until she was 11 years oldand before that,she had been receiving family education at home.With an Austrianmother,she was raised in a German-speaking family,even though she lived inEngland in her child.Due to the fact that her mother was from a defeated country inWorld War I,their family was excluded by the local British.Just as Jolley said in oneof her autobiographies,during her childhood,she lived in a neighborhood that wascurious and hostile towards foreigners(Jolley Central 5).In addition,because shedidn’t go to school in the early days,she didn’t have any friends of her age,and shewas laughed at by her friends of her age every time she walked in the street.

1.2 Literature Review

This paper aims to analyze the female characters in Jolley’s The Newspaper ofClaremont Street from the post-colonial perspective.The study of Elizabeth Jolleyabroad began with her first published collection of short stories.She quickly gainedliterary recognition in 1976 with the publication of her first collection of short stories,The Five Acre Virgin and Other Stories.It can be said that the 1980s was the periodwhen Jolley was gradually accepted and recognized by the Australian literarycommunity,and even by the world literary community.In 1983,Jolley’s novel Mr Scobie’s Riddle was published,which her status further confirmed in the Australianliterary world.According to the CNKI,EBSCO and Austlit and other databases,foreign research on Jolley’s The Newspaper of Claremont Street is as follows：
