With the process of globalization, many scholars work on unveiling Chinese literature historically, politically, and culturally. Among them, Patrick Hanan (1927-2014), an American sinologist and translator, focus on Chinese classical novels and makes significant achievement. He is famous for researching Chinese novels, especially their times, authors, and styles. His works The Chinese Vernacular Story, Chinese Fiction of The Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries, and Invention of Li Yu attract much attention from academics at home and abroad upon publication, which brings the study of Chinese literature into a new stage.

Quelling the Demons’ Revolt is written by Luo Guanzhong who is acknowledged as the novel’s real author by most scholars including Patrick Hanan. The main story is adopted from the historical oral fiction Wang Tse of Pei Chou (贝州王则), describing that some normal people learn some magic to save themselves at first but organize a revolt against the official later. As for the story sketch, it took place in the Renzong Period of the Song Dynasty. Master Hu got a daughter because of obtaining a fairy’s portrait from a Daoist. One day a fire took away all his fortune. His daughter Eterna learned magic from Priestess Pia and then used magic to help him start a business again. However, when Master Hu got rich, he was concerned about daughter’s magic would lead him to arrest the government. So, he hastily married his daughter to Master Jiao’s dump son Daffy. Eventually, Eterna was upset and escaped from her husband with magic. According to the guidance of Priestess Pia who taught her magic, Eterna traveled to Zhengzhou where she met Wang Ze, and then married him and taught him magic. Meanwhile, Priestess Pia guided some vendors to the magic as well, such as Bu Ji, and Ren Qian. Later, under the guidance of Priestess Pia, Wang Ze started a peasant uprising against official corruption and harsh treatment and captured Beizhou. The vendors and civilians also came to help Wang Ze and disturbed the government army. After occupying the city as a king, Wang Ze, Eterna and others began a life of debauchery. And eventually, they were defeated by the government that got the help of three people named Sui. In the end, Wang Ze and Eterna fell to beheadings. The novel focuses on the process of these people learning magic and demonization to disrupt society before the uprising.
