Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
African Americans came from the vast African continent, which has many differentethnic languages and diverse ethnic cultures. They were forced to go to the United States asenslaved Black people and oppressed for over 200 years, losing their original languages andcultures. The winning of the Civil War gave the African American community independence, but it did not solve all the nation’s problems.Although the First World War was atransformative point for the African-American community, accelerating its entry into thecities and improving some security systems, cultural trends such as the Harlem Renaissanceemerged gradually. After World War II,African Americans’economic and political statusgradually improved, and a middle class of African-American professionals, governmentofficials, and other professionals emerged in U.S.society.Their contributions and influenceon American society continued to grow.
In the 20th century,African American literature developed and flourished, culminatingin three periods of growth. The first climax of African-American literature was achievedthrough the Harlem Renaissance movement, which had strong ethnic tones and emphasizedAfrican Americans dual and double identities. The Harlem Renaissance, which took placefrom the 1920s to the 1940s,was a turning point in the history of African American literature.Naturalistic portrayals of the oppression, prejudice, and inequality that African Americansexperienced were criticized and made public. This integration of African-American literaturewith mainstream American culture was groundbreaking. The second climax occurred fromthe 1940s to the 1950s,when protest literature became mainstream. After the 1950s,mostAfrican American literature focused on the inner world of the protagonists.Following theend of World War II,African American literature quickly advanced, reflecting the CivilRights Movement,self-affirmation,and improvement of the country’s standards.
1.2 Literature Review
Since the 20th century, autobiography has become an independent genre and a majorresearch topic in Western scholarship. Moreover, the shift in self-consciousness from publicto private has led to the prominence of individual self-consciousness in autobiographicalworks, making autobiography a more modern genre.National culture and history’s dualityand specificity significantly affect the African American writers’cognitive process ofself-awareness.In Autobiography Pact(2001),French biographical theorist Philippe Lejeuneclaims that an autobiographical narrative is a retrospective narrative written in prose by aspecific person who wants to highlight their personal life, especially their unique life.According to Lejeune, the“autobiographical pact”formulation indicates that the linebetween fiction and autobiography is being maintained. The difference betweenautobiography and other genres lies in the trinity of author, narrator, and character. In otherwords, there is complete equivalence among the trinity,so intrinsically analyzing the textshows no difference between autobiography and fiction(Lejeune).
Research data shows that over 400 African American autobiographies were publishedfrom 1本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
