Chapter Five New Breakthrough and Historical Writing:Brothers and Keepers
5.1 Breaking Literary Barriers:A New Exploration
Brothers and Keepers explores several themes that were established by the foundinggenre of African American literary tradition, the slave narrative. The book primarily focuseson two central concerns of the slave narrative:liberty and literacy.Despite the similaritiesbetween Brothers and Keepers and the slave narratives,Wideman’s work also serves as arevision of some of the genre’s most significant conventions and assumptions about“blackauthorship, validation, voice, and narrative structure”(Fast 3).Whether as a direct responseor not,Wideman’s book diverges from the slave narrative in various ways.
Brothers and Keepers is a unique and groundbreaking work of literature combiningmemoir, fiction, and social commentary elements. One of the key new aspects of the book ishow it explores the relationship between two brothers, one of whom is incarcerated for life.Wideman’s perspective on this dynamic is intimate and reflective, providing a nuancedunderstanding of the complex bonds that tie families together, even in extreme adversity. This Book is dual-natured,offering an autobiography of the author and his family and anexpose of African Americans in prison.

In terms of the themes of these autobiographies, the four books’themes graduallydeveloped throughout African-American history.Initially,Up from Slavery showcasesBooker T.Washington’s gentle fight for educational opportunities and African Americanpersonal spiritual enlightenment.Black Boy presents the internal and social factorscontributing to Wrig本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
