Chapter One INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

As a crucial non-traditional security threat, climate change is undoubtedly a significant part of constructing ecological civilization. The Global environment and climate change have been widely recognized by all countries in the world, and the urgency is increasing day by day. During the past few years, climate change has been likely to kill far more people than COVID-19, with more than 5 million deaths a year attributable to abnormally high and low temperatures and the frequency and amplitude of climate change-related disasters intensified to a large extent.(Romanello et al, 2021). In addition, Penz(2018) points climate change and global warming should be the core topics in ecolinguistics. 

 There are many discussions on the linguistic theoretical basis of climate change reports, mainly involving systemic-functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics. Systemic-functional linguistics is a comprehensive and theoretically powerful language model which can be used to solve many theoretical and practical problems encountered by language users in modern society (Halliday, 2008). Based on systemic functional linguistics, most studies focus on the transitivity system, mood system, modality system, grammatical metaphor, context and other theories, but there are few relevant studies from the perspective of appraisal theory. 

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance

This purpose of this study is to explore the applicability and practicability of appraisal theory in news reports on climate change under the vision of systemic functional linguistics. The thesis aims to display the distribution of appraisal resources on climate change reports in China Daily and  The New York Times. Additionally, the employment of the appraisal resources and the possible reasons leading to the differences in the two newspapers are analyzed through specific examples.

Based on Martin’s appraisal theory, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the reports on climate change in China Daily and  The New York Times, which has the following research significance:

First, from comprehensive research results on discourse analysis of climate change reports, it is rare to conduct a discourse analysis of climate change reports from the perspective of systematic functional linguistics, and even rare to conduct a comparative discourse analysis from the perspective of appraisal theory. Therefore, this study has a certain innovative significance, which displays a new perspective to analyze news reports on climate change based on appraisal theory.

Chapter Two LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Previous Studies on Appraisal Theory

Based on Systemic-Functional Grammar, James Martin raised appraisal theory in the 1990s, which is concerned with interpersonal meaning in language, with the subjective presence of a writer/speaker in the texts as he/she adopts a stance towards both the materials he/she presents and those with whom he/she communicates (Martin & Rose, 2003).
