Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
In general, scientific writing is considered to be objective with less authorial pronouns involved. However, with the development of related research, the importance and functions of first-person pronouns as self-mentions in academic writing have been progressively recognized and investigated. The use of self-mentions is proved as an important strategy to present authorial visibility and to achieve discourse and interactional functions in academic writing.
As the most powerful tool for authorial identity construction, self-mentions have received much attention from scholars in linguistic community at home and abroad. The employment of self-mentions helps to signpost the writers’ presences and to highlight their unique and novel contribution to their fields, which are key components of successful academic writing (Tang and John 1999; Hyland 2001, 2002). Appropriate use of self-mentions is conducive for the writers to effectively construct their identities, to present their academic achievements, and to establish authority in the academic field (Dueñas 2007). However, some non-native English writers may underestimate the significance of self-mentions and avoid using them in order to maintain the impersonality of their academic texts. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct the research on the use of self-mentions in English academic writing.
1.2 Research Purpose
In light of the importance of self-mentions, scholars have conducted numerous studies on their use in English academic writing in different disciplines and languages, and by various language users. However, few focus on the employment of self-mentions in English agricultural papers. According to Hyland (2001), self-mentions can be divided into three categories, namely, first-person pronouns we, our, us, I, my, and me, third-person nouns the writer and the author, and abstract nouns the paper and the research. In addition, his analysis showed that almost 81% of self-mentions were realized by first-person pronouns, with the other two accounting for only 19%. Therefore, this study mainly explores the use of first-person pronouns as self-mentions in English agricultural science papers and makes a comparative analysis of self-mentions used by English native writers and Chinese native writers in order to provide some reference and implication for the teaching and learning of English academic writing.
To this end, this study uses the web-based corpus platform HZAU CQPweb and compares the use of first-person pronouns in English agricultural papers from journal article (JA) corpus composed of ENWs’ papers and learner corpus (LP) consisting of CNWs’ papers. Taking Hyland’s (2001) classification of self-mentions as theoretical basis, this study examines the use of first-person pronouns we, our, us, I, my, and me, and investigates the collocations of we with reporting verbs and modal verbs, and our with shell nouns and prepositions in two corpora through a quantitative approach. Besides, a qualitative analysis of the discourse functions performed by first-person pronouns in two corpora is also conducted.
