Chapter OneThe Mississippi River as a Literary Device
A.The River as a Story-Space
In the United States, there are about three and a half million miles of rivers andstreams and tens of thousands of waterways flowing wildly in vastly different regions.Of all those rivers, the Mississippi River occupies the highest status, with itsmainstream and tributaries spreading all over the land of the United States like vessels.Mark Twain hails that“the Mississippi River is well worth reading about. It is not acommonplace river, but on the contrary,it is in all ways remarkable.Considering theMissouri its main branch,it is the longest river in the world—four thousand three hundred miles”(1).This celebrated river can be interpreted from different perspectives, such as geography, economy, and literature. It is fair to say that people cannot talk aboutAmerica without referring to the Mississippi River.
Since the first white man,Hernando de Soto discovered the Mississippi River, thispreviously unnoticed river has attracted people’s attention. To tell the truth, not just theMississippi River, but rivers have occupied a very important role in literature.Manywriters have described rivers as a part of the narrative, providing space for theoccurrence of stories.Chatman,a narratologist, puts forward the concepts of“story-space”and“discourse-space”in his book Story and Discovery, believing that“story-space”refers to the place or environment where events occur,and“discourse-space”refers to the place or environment where narrative acts occur(96).
B.The River as a Plot Facilitator
Plots run through the whole story and are regarded as the skeleton of a novel, onwhich all details depend. When writing and analyzing plots, the priority is to form anorganic and dynamic structure among them and avoid treating them as inanimate andmotionless objects.Mark Twain knows this well:the vibrant Mississippi River injectsvitality into plots, giving the novel strong energy and appeal.Characters flee along theriver, every stop bringing an unexpected turning point. Therefore,it is reasonable toconclude that the shift in space along the river is equivalent to the evolution of plots.Inother words, the Mississippi River facilitates the development of plots.Although theauthor focuses on the characters and does not allocate too much space to the puredescription of river scenery, the Mississippi River is omnipresent, and almost allimportant plots are related to it,mirroring the overall picture of the story. For MarkTwain, this river not only provides story-space and supplements narrative structure butalso contains various symbolic and metaphorical meanings.
While witnessing the joys and sorrows of Huck and Jim,the Mississippi Riverpromotes the evolution of plots in a natural way at the same time. Some plots take placeon the river, some plots take place on the river islands, and some plots take place in the riverside towns. It can be seen that the Mississippi River is Mark Twain’s favoritenarrative scene. In every major plot,Twain often places the characters on the river todepict them accurately.River scenery fills in the blanks of the narrative and enriches theconnotations of the story.Mark Twain is good at using the Mississippi River to control本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
