1.2 Research Significance

From the perspective of Lefevere’s Manipulative Theory,this thesis makes acomparative study of James Legge’s translation of Zhongyong and Ames and Hall’stranslation of Zhongyong.And this research significance is mainly shown in thefollowing four aspects.

Secondly,compared with other classics in the Four Books,the comparativestudies on English translations of Zhongyong at home and abroad are relatively weak.Whether in quantity or in breadth and depth of research,the study of the Englishtranslation of Confucian classics such as the Analects and Mencius have greatlyexceeded that of the English translation of Zhongyong.And there are few comparativestudies on the version translated by James Legge and the version translated by Amesand Hall.Therefore,this thesis enriches the perspective of the study of Zhongyongand provides some useful supplements to the previous research results to some extent.
