“Overt narrative progression”,used by Shen Dan,is a concept borrowed fromPhelan’s theory of“narrative progression”.As the representative figure of the thirdgeneration of Chicago School,Phelan has been a leading figure in the internationalnarrative research field since the 1990s,whose researches have promoted thedevelopment of rhetorical narratology powerfully.
The concept of narrative progression is introduced and gradually refined by Phelan.In Reading People,Reading Plots:Character,Progression,and the Interpretation ofNarrative,Phelan first introduces the concept of“progression”,in which Phelan arguesthat progression is“a dynamic event,one that must move,in both its telling and itsreception,through time”(15).This definition preliminarily describes the content ofnarrative progression,which is a dynamic event and contains both the narrator’s telling and the reader’s reception.Later,Phelan elaborates on narrative progression inNarrative as Rhetoric:Technique,Audiences,Ethics,Ideology:
Progression refers to the way in which a narrative establishes its own logic of forwardmovement(and thus addresses the first sense of narrative as dynamic experience),and itrefers to the way that movement carries with it invitations to different kinds of responsesin the reader(and thus it addresses the second sense of narrative as dynamic experience).The structuralist distinction between story and discourse helps explain the way the logicof narrative movement can develop.Progressions can be generated through whathappens with the elements of story,that is,through the introduction of instabilities—conflictual relations between or within characters that lead to complications in the actionand sometimes eventually to resolution.Progressions can also be generated through whathappens with the elements of discourse,that is,through tensions or conflictual relations—relations involving significant gaps in values,beliefs,or knowledge—betweenauthors and readers or narrators and readers.Unlike instabilities,tensions do not need tobe resolved for narratives to achieve closure.(90)
B.Covert Narrative Progression:Trying Healing Traumas
