Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

The author of Luotuo Xiangzi is Lao She(1899-1966),the pen name of ShuQingchun,who is the first writer awarded‘People’s Artist’in new China.Born inpoverty and suffering from the loss of his father as a child,he worked hard,experiencing and witnessing various miseries of ordinary people,all of whichbecomes the origin of his works.After graduating from Beijing Normal University,hebecame a Chinese teacher at the School of Oriental,University of London,UnitedKingdom.

As a respected Chinese modern novelist,fabulous language master,and people’sartist,Lao She is a prolific writer,writing more than 22 novels,more than 6 workcollections,one textbook,over 300 poems,46 quyi works1,and some calligraphyworks.2 The representative works include Luotuo Xiangzi(Howard Goldblatttranslated it as Rickshaw Boy),Si Shi Tong Tang(The Yellow Storm),Xiao Po DeSheng Ri,Mao Cheng Ji(City of Cats),etc.

Lao She’s language is distinctive.Born and raised in Beijing city,he is an expertin using the Beijing dialect in his works,displaying strong‘Beijing taste’,which givesvividness and attractiveness to the novel.Thus,Lao She’s works have been winning alarge number of readers all along.Luotuo Xiangzi is one of his best sellers.

Aiming to arouse people’s awareness in a corrupt society,Lao She depicts acharacter named Xiangzi,who works very hard to live a good life,despite the manytroubles he experiences.However,he is still doomed to have a miserable life,becausehe is a rickshaw boy at the bottom of society.The novel presents a true picture ofChina in the 1920s.

1.2 Research Questions and Significance

The key elements of Mona Baker’s narrative theory are the four framingstrategies.Accordingly,the thesis is going to analyze Rickshaw Boy from theperspective of the four strategies,and answer the questions in the following:

(1)How are the four framing strategies adopted by the translator?(2)What are the purposes and translation effects of the framing strategies?(3)How is Mona Baker’s narrative theory appropriate for Chinese literaturetranslation study?

Through the exploration and analysis of the four framing strategies used in thetranslation,the reasons and effects of the reframing are to be discussed.Furthermore,the third question,based on the preceding discussion is going to be discussed as wellin the conclusion.
