4.1 Spatial Framing

Lao She’s Luotuo Xiangzi describes situations in China to Chinese people.Goldblatt’s translation targets American readers.The target readers are two greatlydifferent nationalities and the markets are two countries with a great space and quitevarious cultures.Only when the reading experience is good can readers continue thereading.

Therefore,in Rickshaw Boy,Goldblatt adopts spatial framing in the units to betterserve target readers,including monetary,weight and length units.These units aretermed differently in different countries or districts.Translators usually apply spatialframing to localize the units,and express them according to the usage of target market.And there are several similar cases in Rickshaw Boy.

Obviously,Goldblatt applies the English monetary system,using“cent”,ratherthan“jiao”(角)4 in the original.As‘cent’is known to the English world,people inthe USA could master‘cent’without confusion,but they could not figure out what“jiao”(角)means if Goldblatt translates it literally.The translation conveys the samemeaning in different forms.With the spatial framing,Goldblatt creates a connectionwith the text and readers,removing barricades.

Through a comparative analysis between original and target texts,it turns out thatthe translator has used all four framing strategies–spatial framing,selectiveappropriation of textual material,framing by labelling and repositioning ofparticipants.
