In 2005,Mona Baker proposed narrative in Narratives in and of Translation.In2006,Mona Baker systemically illustrated narrative theory in the book Translationand Conflict:A Narrative Account.She argued that power and rights usually have aninfluence on the conflicts in translation and that the translation is not only from theoriginal text but also other factors,such as translators’ontological narratives,as wellas public narratives from the target environment.Mona Baker believes that translatorsdo not just serve as pure and simple bridges connecting original and target texts,butrather are active activists.In 2011,Zhao Wenjing,Mona Baker’s PhD student,translated the book into Chinese,better publicizing the theory in China.

After the publication of the book in 2006,the theory has won continuousattention and research from several worldwide scholars.They comment,develop orapply the theory.

2.1.1 Previous Studies Abroad

Since the theory came into being,lots of scholars present their views on it.Elliot(2008),a translator of the Bible,praises highly the theory,believing that the theorycan solve the problems met in the translation of religions.

Some scholars study further around the theory.Harding(2012)creatively revisedthe narrative types,and studies within the text with approaches of a combination of narrative and sociological theory.He also puts a new emphasis on the importance ofnarrators and temporary narrators in the(re)configuration of narratives.Harding hasdifferent views on the typology of narratives,which makes development and criticalview of Mona Baker’s theory.Moreover,Guidin(2013)adopts an interdisciplinaryapproach to combine narrative theory and metaphor theory to study translation,making a theoretical and practical redefinition of translation studies to revealideologies.

2.2 Previous Studies on Lao She’s Luotuo Xiangzi and Its EnglishTranslations

2.2.1 Previous Studies on Lao She’s Luotuo Xiangzi

As mentioned above,the research of Lao She’s Luotuo Xiangzi mainly lies inthree main fields:the reality revealed,language style and its translation.
