1.1 Research Background
The narrative of The Orphan of Zhao can be traced back to its first appearance inhistorical texts such as the“Three Biographies of the Spring and Autumn Period”(ZuoZhuan,Gong Yang Zhuan,Gu Liang Zhuan). Its subsequent dramatic development isrooted in Sima Qian’s“The Records of the Grand Historian”and came to fruition in JiJunxiang’s Yuan miscellaneous drama The Orphan of Zhao. This theatrical masterpieceembodies a fusion of a grand historical narrative with intense personal emotionalstruggles. It is a grand tragedy that interweaves historical events with individualemotional struggles. The play delves into themes such as the battle between justice andevil, the conflict between conscience and the desire for power, the paradox of killing andrevenge, the nobility and cost of sacrifice, the endurance of suffering and humiliation, thepursuit of world peace and heavenly bliss, and more. The characters in the play expresstheir beliefs and ideals through their actions, demonstrating their commitment to justice, conscience, sacrifice, and resistance to suffering. The play is a rare masterpiece ofChinese theatre that has been interpreted, transformed, and disseminated over thecenturies, showcasing its profound literary heritage and making it an enduring work ofhuman theatre that transcends time, place, and language.
In 1731,The Orphan of Zhao was translated into French by the missionary Joseph dePrémare and introduced to the Western audience. This was a notable event as it markedthe first instance of a Chinese theatre being presented to the West. The French version ofthe opera was subsequently included in the“Description géographique, historique, chronologique, politique,et physique del’Empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie chinoise”in1735,further attesting to its significance. The French publication of the opera triggered awave of translations in various languages including English,Russian,Italian, and German, thereby expanding its reach across the Western world during the same period.AlthoughPrémare did not fully translate the work and omitted most of the cantos,he recognized itsbeauty and emotional depth.
1.2 Literature Review
1.2.1 Previous Studies Abroad
Since The Orphan of Zhao is an ancient Chinese literary work, foreign scholars havestudied it less frequently, mainly in the following areas:the study on overseasdissemination and literary influence, translation and adaptation, and the comparison ofChinese and Foreign theatre versions.
1.2.1.1 The Study on Overseas Dissemination and Literary Influence
The passage“‘Confucius’Morals to Britannia’s Ears’:Modern Virtue in TheOrphan of China,1736–1759”from the book Performing China on the London Stageanalyzes The Orphan of Zhao in Europe from different perspectives. The author,AshleyThorpe, argues that the play’s arrival did not necessarily herald a new age in the Europeanunderstanding of Chinese theatre.Instead, the play was used as a foil to explore the Britishitself.Thorpe examines the translations and adaptations of the play in Europe, showingthat it was ultimately harnessed to explore British monarchy, the absolute monarchy inFrance, and the decline of Islamic empires. The invocation of China was merely a stageset for本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
