1.2 Significance of the Project

The study Translating War: Literature and Memory in France and Britain from the 1940s to the 1960s, written by Angela Kershaw in 2018, explores the complex histories of publications that helped create Western societies’ “memories” of World War II and their interaction with ideas of national identity. Through key works of French military fiction and their translations into English, the book passes through different stages and spaces of translation and perception: the translation of the French Resistance in London and New York, the war novel in post-war France and Great Britain, and the languages of Holocaust fiction.
