Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Project

Translation and publication activities played a significant role in the resistance movements in both China and France during World War II. There are some studies that focus on specific cases or individuals who engaged in translation and publication as forms of resistance against the Japanese and Germany occupation, respectively, there is a need for a more comprehensive and systematic examination of the similarities and differences between these two scenarios, as well as the interactions and influences that occurred between them. Such an analysis would shed light on the role of translation and publication as tools of political and ideological expression, communication and mobilization, as well as their effects on the social and cultural transformations that took place during and after the war.

1.2 Significance of the Project

The study Translating War: Literature and Memory in France and Britain from the 1940s to the 1960s, written by Angela Kershaw in 2018, explores the complex histories of publications that helped create Western societies’ “memories” of World War II and their interaction with ideas of national identity. Through key works of French military fiction and their translations into English, the book passes through different stages and spaces of translation and perception: the translation of the French Resistance in London and New York, the war novel in post-war France and Great Britain, and the languages of Holocaust fiction. It lays out the tasks set for the translator, who must find the words to connect these very different cultural contexts and convey the traumatic experiences at the heart of modern history – not least the almost inexpressible experience of the survivor. Translate Translating War: Literature and Memory in France and Britain from the 1940s to the 1960s by Angela Kershaw into Chinese would be a valuable contribution to the field of comparative literature and history, as it would enable a comprehensive and systematic examination of the similarities and differences between resistance movements in both China and France during World War II. Chinese readers would gain a deeper understanding of the complex and diverse ways that war and resistance were translated into literature in France and Britain, as well as how these literary texts translated into memory and identity in the post-war era. Moreover, translating this book would also foster a dialogue and exchange between Chinese and French scholars and writers, who could compare and contrast their perspectives and insights on war, resistance, literature, and memory. Translating this book would thus help to enrich the global knowledge and appreciation of the cultural legacy of World War II.

Chapter 2 Analysis of the Source Text

2.1 Lexical Features

The source text mostly discusses historical events like French Resistance, Free France. For the historical documentation part, there are no complicated technological words and terms for any English and Chinese readers, given that they should have basic knowledge of said historical events, like Dunkirk, D-day, Desert Fox. Yet as the source text is mostly about French history, it ine论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
