Chapter One Task Description and Translation Process

1.1 Task Description

The translation task comes from a translation assignment that observes the aim of thetranslator to be an intern in translation.As we know,to be a qualified translator requires notonly passion,practice but also opportunity.This assignment provides an opportunity topractice exactly.Its specific content is about a Chinese book translation with paymentintroduced by the supervisor,for English readers to learn more about the historical story ofGeorge Hatem in China.The name of this book is George Hatem:An American Doctor with aChinese Heart written by Chen Dunde,published in 2021 and has not been translated intoEnglish so far.Cross-cultural communication as an important topic,the discussion on thetranslation of the book has special significance and value.The excerpts,the sixth to the eighthchapter of the book as translation materials are chosen by the translator who is also the authorof this translation practice report.According to the requirement of the translator’s school,apractice report should focus on a translation task containing English or Chinese translationtext with more than 10,000 words in relatively high quality.Thus,the number of words in theexcerpts are more than 10,000,and all of them are Chinese.The assignment of the translatoris to translate Chinese to English as a translation process of source language transformedbased on references with several proofs to ensure the quality of the target text.

1.2 Translation ProcessThe translation assignment was carried out within a month.The translation process refersto three parts,pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation revision.Technically,thepre-translation means reading and analyzing the source language,grasping the main idea ofthe source text,collecting terms to build up a glossary and checking them on authorizedwebsites,and trying to find parallel texts to read and analyze them,etc.The process ofwhile-translation means conversion or transcription,where the translator begins to translate.Technically,this is a conversion whether or not there is a transcription.The post-translationprocess refers to proofreading concerning quality monitored by the translators and othersincluding other translators in the group,the supervisor and editors or revisers with quality oftranslation controlled by the third party.

1.2.1 Pre-translation

It took 6 days to carry out pre-translation.

Firstly,the translator read through the source text and confirmed that this text describesred culture referring to the health undertakings of the People’s Republic of China.Thecontents of the source text refer to specific terms like the Soviet Area and the Red Army.Thetranslator needs to devote a lot of time to analyzing the material,except for specialemergencies(where the translator will take a risk)or when she knows the subject and theclient well.
