Chapter One INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

The study of anaphora resolution has been an important domain in first and second language acquisition and psycholinguistics for decades. Language users must constantly decide whether expressions in different portions of a text belong to the same discursive item in order to successfully understand it. Anaphora is a common approach to create these kinds of referential relationships. Anaphora is the linguistic relationship in which one language refers to another language in a text that often comes before it. The linguistic element that refers to another element is known as an antecedent, and the linguistic element to which the anaphor refers is known as the anaphor. For instance, the pronoun he is used as an anaphor to refer to the proper name in the sentence “When Andy finishes his work, he starts to plan his trip to Thailand.” Andy, who acts as the anaphor’s antecedent. An anaphor’s interpretation depends in part on its antecedent. Anaphora resolution is the process of figuring out an anaphor’s antecedent. 

There are many different types of anaphoric expressions that can be used to refer to a previously mentioned discourse entity, including pronouns (e.g., he, him, his, this), definite noun phrases (e.g., the president, green tea), proper names (e.g., China, Mary), and expressions that are introduced by a lexical modifier or a comparative adjective (e.g., “one” in “another one”). Among the various anaphoric expression types, pronouns are the most prevalent and frequently used, but they only contain a limited amount of information about the referent, whereas definite expressions contain a much greater amount of semantic information. 

1.2 Significance of the Study

Pronouns sometimes have confusing meanings since they only provide minimal information about their antecedent, such as gender, number, and animacy. Much psycholinguistic research has been interested in the impact of gender ambiguity and the use of gender cue in pronominal anaphora resolution. Researchers have looked into the processes through which pronouns with unclear gender are resolved in a variety of research. A variety of experimental techniques, including the probe recognition task, the naming task, the self-paced reading task, etc., have been used in investigations of English pronominal anaphora resolution. With regard to the processing mechanisms of pronominal anaphora resolution, earlier investigations produced wildly divergent and often even contradictory results. An insightful analysis of pronominal anaphora’s online processing can be obtained from the eye-movement experiment. The results of our most recent eye-movement studies would support some of the arguments already made about the resolution of English pronominal anaphoras and serve to paint a clearer picture of the processing’s time course.

The processing of English reflexive pronouns by Chinese English speakers online has only been the subject of a small number of research, most of which focused on the subject. These earlier studies hardly ever used eye-movement trials. Numerous concerns remain unanswered as a result of the studies’ inconsistent pattern of findings.
