本文是一篇英语论文提纲，本研究运用定量与定性相结合的研究方法。在语言模态方面，本研究自建了一个名为“APP”的小型语料库，随后基于Halliday的系统功能语法，借助UAM Corpus Tool6和AntC onc 3.5.9对语言模态进行标注和分析。

Chapter One INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

With the continuous development of multimedia and the widespread use of the Internet, people’s communication mode has gradually shifted from traditional language forms to multimodal forms that include images, sounds, animations, and colors. More and more multimodal discourses are presented to the public and play a significant role in constructing and expressing meaning. Multimodal discourse analysis is the foundation and development of traditional discourse analysis. Traditional discourse analysis only studies from a pure language perspective, which cannot meet the need for a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the meaning construction of discourse. Non-verbal resources such as images, videos, and Music have become popular means of communication, prompting people to pay more and more attention to how different modal forms such as language, images, actions, and sounds affect and change people’s lives. Multimodal research has become an inevitable trend in research. 

Since the 1990s, scholars from different fields have conducted MDA research on various materials and closely combined the multimodal research direction with social development. As the only home shared by human beings, the earth has gradually evolved a unique marine and land distribution in the long development process and formed a variety of ecosystems, creating a living environment and development environment for people. However, in human progress and development, the earth is suffering from various crises brought about by human development. The over-exploitation of cultivated land and overgrazing of pastures cause severe soil erosion. Human activities have led to a rapid increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere. Extreme weather, such as rainstorms, floods and droughts caused by global warming and climate change, has seriously affected people’s lives. The acceleration of urbanization has caused very serious environmental problems. In addition, more and more species have gone to the end of their lives and have entirely bid farewell to the earth. All kinds of situations show that human beings’ over-exploitation and utilization of nature have changed our stable living environment. The natural environment has been seriously damaged, and the ecological balance has been gradually broken, making the interdependence between man and nature turn to mutual opposition. The earth’s current situation is not good, which has forced mankind to reconsider the relationship with other species on the earth and take active actions to protect the earth, the only home of mankind. 

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

The purpose of this study is to enrich the research fields of multimodal discourse analysis and explore how this type of documentary uses different modalities to construct ecological meaning, providing certain implications for future research scholars. Additionally, this study aims to provide a new perspective for viewers to appreciate and understand nature documentaries, thereby further enhancing their environmental awareness and cultivating their ecological protection behavior.
