Claremont Street arebook reviews. They analyze this novel from the perspectives of character image, theme, narrative, and post-colonialism.

Firstly, some research is on the image of characters in the novel. In the early daysof the novel’s publication, many scholars began to comment on the main characters inthe novel. They are respectively Thomas Shapcott,Eliot Helen,Gray Paul,FreemanJudith and Kay Ryan.In 1982,Thomas Shapcott(1982)comments that the heroine“Weekly”is a tenacious survivor. And the ability to touch the fragile nerve center ofhuman beings and reveal the tragic nature of human needs in this little comedy ofsurvival has not been seen so finely balanced and precise since Nabokov’s short storycollection Pnin. While in Australian Perspectives:Character and Situation,EliotHelen(1983)holds the view that the heroine’s life in this novel reflects deeply on theplight of marginal characters in real life.

Chapter II Embodiment of Women as“the Other”

2.1 Women as“the Other”in Patriarchy

Women, due to their weak gender identity, become“the Other”in a patriarchalsociety.Weekly, because of her marginalized status in the family, becomes“the Other”whose self-awareness is lost.Leila,a key role in her own marriage—the bride, canonly be in an objective position and becomes“the Other”being shaped and defined.Similarly,Mrs.Morris becomes a son-centered“the Other”due to her attachment andobedience to men.

2.1.1 Weekly—Marginal Woman in Family

“Patriarchy’s chief institution is the family”(Millett 33).Family,as the smallestunit of the group,is not only the reflection form of society, but also the link of society. At the same time, family,as the tool and basic unit of patriarchal society, plays a vitalrole.Family needs to encourage its internal members to adapt and comply withsociety like social agents. The Newspaper of Claremont Street is based on a traditionalpatriarchal family model, where Weekly,as a member of family,is only left in amarginal situation. In this novel,Jolley interweaves the childhood family experiencesof Weekly—the protagonist of this novel into different chapters through flashbacknarration. And every reappearance of these memories reflects the tragic childhoodexperiences of Weekly which exposes the identity of Weekly as“the Other”in thefamily.

2.2 Women as“the Other”in Colonialism

Under the colonial culture,Weekly loses her right to speak, and further becomesthe discipline and obedience under the colonial discourse.Gradually, she loses hername and becomes“the Other”of the colonial culture.

2.2.1 Weekly—Absence of Discourse Power

The term“discourse”originated in the late 14th century. It is derived from theFrench word“discours”,the Latin word“discursus”.It originally meant“a runningover subject in speech, communication of thoughts in words”.According to NewOxford American Dictionary,“discourse”refers to the language of political discourse.Foucault believes that power is the fundamental factor influencing and controlling thediscourse movement.Discourse and power are inseparable and power is realized through discourse(Huang 78).And the relationship between power and knowledge asembodied by discourse is particularly important in the relationship between thecolonizer and the colonized(Luo 135).

In The Newspaper of Claremont Street,as a colonized person,Weekly lacks rightto speak. The Torbens are i论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
