This thesis exerts the perspective of Feminism and Values,and by sorting out theChinese and American love and marriage values in terms of standards of spouse selection,purposes of love and marriage,position in family life and career development and attitudes towards sex and divorce,it presents the new characteristics and trends in the contemporaryChinese and American love and marriage concepts,and elaborates the underlying reasons forthe differences in love and marriage values of the two nations.The views on love andmarriage of both China and the United States have their own unique national characteristics.However,these characteristics and these differences can be reflected by the different views onlove and marriage as shown in the two classic and romantic TV series.Therefore,bycomparing and analyzing the differences between Chinese and American views on love andmarriage,this thesis can help Chinese contemporary youth establish and uphold a correct andpositive views on love and marriage.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 A Brief Introduction to the Two TV Plays

In this thesis,when it comes to the study text,the paper makes a contrastive study thedifferences of Chinese and American love and marriage values from the two popular TVseries,namely,Nothing but Thirty and Sex and The City.

We all know that both TV plays and films are the carrier of culture.Obviously,the viewson love and marriage are also presented through movies and TV dramas in the form of motionpictures.For this reason,TV series play an efficient and effective part in people’s viewpointtoward things and depict people’s ways of thinking,living style,folk-customs,and variousother values.

2.1.1 A Brief Introduction to the Chinese TV Plays-Nothing but Thirty

The Chinese love TV play Nothing but Thirty shows three thirty-year-old females,Gujia,Wang Manni and Zhong Xiaoqin,who live in a metropolitan city—Shanghai City,where theydisplay their own unique life-track on pursuing romantic love story and long-lasting andhappy marriage,career identity and pursuit,personal self-satisfaction and self-worth,respectively.As the TV play outline shows,the three females possess their own differentliving habits,especially personality features,and speaking and thinking styles.Finally,theybecome good friends and find their own happiness.

2.2 Studies on Feminism at Home and Abroad

In the course of its development,feminism was pioneered by modernist feminist theoryin the West,and through constant development,many different schools and branches have formed:liberal feminism,Marxist feminism or socialist feminism,existential feminism,radical feminism,ecological feminism,and so on.In the late twentieth century,postmodernfeminism emerged,which deconstructed the modern feminism.Although all of these brancheshave different research results and theories,none of them has ultimately departed from theoriginal intention of pursuing equality between men and women.By comparison,domesticscholars started their research on feminism relatively late.In China,the development offeminism is slightly different from that of feminism in the international arena.

2.2.1 Studies of Feminism Abroad
