Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies of Metadiscourse

2.1.1 Definitions and Classifications of Metadiscourse

Many scholars tried to define metadiscourse from various perspectives. From the perspective of linguistics, Harris(1959) proposed the concept of meta-discourse. Rossiter (1974) studied meta-discourse from the view of Speech Communication Principle. He called meta-discourse as 'meta-communication'. He believed that 'meta-communication' referred to all information about communication, both verbal and non-verbal. Meyer (1975) called meta-discourse as 'signaling'. 'Signaling' refers to the system that connects the discourse structure and the non-content of the discourse information, which itself has no influence on the topic content. Lautamatti (1978) believed that meta-discourse was a non-topic material that provided a framework for topic content and is helpful for discourse understanding.

From the perspective of psycholinguistics, Keller (1979) defined the meta-discourse as 'gambits', and believed that it had the functions of marking the topic structure, constructing the conversation's turn-taking, indicating the cognitive state of information, and checking if the communication channels were smooth.

From the perspective of sociolinguistics, Schiffrin called meta-discourse as 'meta-talk' which is used to organize and evaluate discourse.Williams (1981) was the first person who formally used the term 'meta-discourse' and introduced it into the field of writing. He defined meta-discourse as “the discourse about discourse” and he held the opinion that meta-discourse had nothing to do with the content. Since then, the term 'meta-discourse' has been generally accepted. VandeKopple (1985) argued that meta-discourse is a mechanism which has nothing to do with the content of basic information. It was used to guide readers to organize, classify, interpret, evaluate and reflect the information conveyed by the text. Crismore(1989) thought that meta-discourse was constituted by theme attitude, textual meaning and interpersonal meaning of discourse and it does not increase the propositional content, but helps the audience to understand and evaluation of the given information and the construction of a coherent discourse.

2.2 Previous Studies of Pragmatic Identity Construction

2.2.1 Definitions and Classifications of Identity

From Social perspective, Marx and Engels pointed out that identity referred to people's origin, status and qualification, and referred to people's status in certain social relations. So everyone has identity. (Yuan&Chen, 2013). From the social perspective, identity and social relations are inseparable, and communicators must form their own identities in social system, so no communication, no identity.

From Psychological perspective, Stratton and Hayes(1998) believed that identity was about individual's self-concept. Psychological perspective emphasizes the accessibility of the mental consciousness of communicators (communicators are often described as actors in psychological literature), and holds the opinion that all relevant behaviors which communicator consciousness can explain oneself are related to identity.

From Social psychological perspective, Antaki and Widdicombe (1998) viewed a person's i论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
