ce her awareness and responsibility as translators in the process of choosing different translation strategies for different examples. Through this translation practice, the translator also hopes to grasp Chesterman’s theory and the guiding role of translation theory in translation practice in a more comprehensive and in-depth manner. The translator realizes that translation strategies are problem-centered. Translation strategies are proposed to solve translation problems, and problems are the starting point of translation strategies. Chesterman’s translation norm theory has strong practicality and operability in the translation process. By exploring the application of Chesterman’s theory in such translation practice, this paper further confirms that the theory plays a guiding role in text translation, and it can provide many specific translation ideas and techniques for translation practice.

Chapter 2 Theoretical Framework

2.1 The Development of Translation Norm Theory

The term “norms” first originates from Sociology and refers to “voluntary behavior that is prevalent within a given reference group” (Matthew, 2011: 425). Sociology defines it as a socially accepted universal value or idea. Social norms are “standards of behavior that are based on widely shared beliefs about how individual group members ought to behave in a given situation” (Bernhard et al, 2006: 217). An overview of foreign studies on translation norms since the 1950s can be divided into three perspectives: traditional linguistics, textual linguistics, and translation studies. (Han & Zhang, 2004: 53). Initially, Levy and Holmes introduced the concept of norms into translation theory, but it was Gideon Toury, an Israeli translation theorist, who really drew brought translation norms research gradually to the attention of translation filed, applying social norm theory to translation studies. Toury distinguished three kinds of translation norms: preparatory norm, initial norms and operational norms. In his book Describing Translation Studies and Others, he pointed out that since translation is a kind of socio-cultural behavior, it must follow certain social customs and norms. And translators inevitably adopt different translation strategies under different conditions, and their translated works are bound to be different. Norms are mandatory rules and conditional choices of individuals, values and concepts accepted by a specific community, such as right and wrong, appropriate and inappropriate, should and should not, etc. He further discussed the relationship between the three branches of translation research: descriptive translation research, theoretical translation research, and applied translation research, and emphasizes the importance of descriptive translation for translation activities. The “norms” in sociology were introduced into translation activities, and it was clearly pointed out that translation is an act restricted by norms. He believes that translation, as a type of social and cultural activity, should be subject to social and cultural constraints. Hermans critically inherited Toury’s normative theory, deeply studied the nature and applicability of translation norms, and further developed Toury’s normative theory.

2.2 Andrew Chesterman’s Translation Norms

Chesterman puts the understanding and perception of translation from different perspectives and at 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
