4.1.1 Conversion

Due to the different expression habits of English and Chinese,the use of parts ofspeech is also different.In order to make the translation fluent,and easy to understand,and conform to the expression mode of the target language,sometimes the part of speechneeds to be adjusted in the process of translation.For example,nouns are converted intoverbs,adjectives into verbs,adverbs into nouns,etc.

Example 1:

(ST=source text;TT=target text)

[ST]:I can’t know what people truly thought about me.(see Appendix A,p.47)

[TT]:我不清楚人们对我真实的看法。（see Appendix B，p.66）

[Analysis]:

This sentence contains an object clause guided by“what”,and the object clauseitself is a kind of nominal clause.The part of speech of“thought”in the clause is a verb,but when translated according to the part of speech of the verb,it is“人们真正怎么想我的”,which is stiff and does not read smoothly.Therefore,according to Chineseexpression habits,the translator adopts the conversion translation technique to transform“thought”from a verb to a noun“看法”,and the word“truly”is transformed from an adverb to an adjective“真实的”to modify the noun,translating this part into“真实的看法”.In this way,the translation is smoother,and the target language readers can get abetter reading experience.

5.1 Major Gains

The completion of this translation practice report has cost the translator a lot ofeffort,but it is indeed very worthwhile.The translator has learned a lot of useful andvaluable knowledge throughout the whole process of translation practice,mainlyincluding the following points:

First of all,through this translation practice,the translator has gained a deeperunderstanding of communicative translation theory.Communicative translation theoryplays an important role in the translation of marriage and emotion books.This type ofbook belongs to the vocative text,which is reader-centered and aims to guide and appealthe readers,ultimately facilitating their action.When translating,the translator should notonly make the translation close to the original text without deviating from the author’sideas but also consider the readers to the greatest extent,taking into account theirreactions and reading effects.It is necessary to carry out various processing at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels in order to increase the readability and appeal of thetranslation.

Secondly,by deeply learning Newmark’s translation theory and applying varioustranslation skills based on the characteristics of vocative text,the translator’s translationability has been greatly improved.In addition,the translator has enhanced languageexpression and logical thinking while writing the paper.It has laid a solid foundation forfuture work and study.At the same time,the translator’s research skills have been furtherimproved through the use of various auxiliary tools as well as efficient access to andcollection of relevant materials and literature.As a result,the translation practice has been successfully completed.
