Nida believes that translation involves the representation of source language information into the target language in the most appropriate, natural, and equivalent manner, spanning from semantics to stylistics (Guo, 2000). A close study of Nida’s definition of translation concludes that a good translation not only limited in the level of lexical equivalence, but also multidimensional equivalence, for instance, semantics, text, and style (Kolesnikova, 2016). As far as Nida can see, equivalence does not mean identity. Due to the cross-culture differences and interlingual divergence of two languages, the equivalence in translation is not the mathematical concept of identity, but rather a kind of proximity. The main work of the translator should be to realize the closest natural equivalent of the source.
Lexical equivalence primarily refers to substituting words in the target language with those that have similar cultural connotations to the source language words. It involves combining specific meanings within a specific context. Furthermore, these terms represent culturally different objects, but their functions may be somewhat similar (Wang, 2016). Secondly, at the lexical level, it is necessary to notice the semantic classes of the word. In order to keep native meaning of source text, translators should make some changes for the words of translation. Translators may need to make adjustments such as changing the word order, substituting verbs for nouns, and replacing pronouns with nouns, among other techniques, to ensure a more accurate and meaningful translation (Nida, 1964).
2.2 Significance of Functional Equivalence Theory in Translation
The functional equivalence theory plays a crucial role in the process of translation.
First of all, the reader of this text is almost the general public, which requires the translator to reproduce the source information to the maximum extent in order to the target language readers accurately and easily understand what we need to do in family education and what we need to pursue in family culture.
Furthermore, the number of research papers published by Chinese scholars on the theory of functional equivalence has been increasing year by year. Nida’s theory of functional equivalence has gained popularity in recent years and has been used to guide the translation of educational texts. For example, Sun Tong (2021), Cai Kefei (2021), Xie Qiaomei (2022) Some researchers also choose the theory of functional equivalence in their papers to provide guidance for the translation of educational texts. It also shows that this theory has been welcomed by more Chinese scholars and its acceptance in China is growing.
According to the research result, Nida’s theory can be applied to a wide range of texts, including tourism texts, business texts, news articles, government reports, and so on.
