Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research background

At the end of the twentieth century,some foreign experts proposed the theory ofmulti-modal discourse analysis.Symbols in multi-modal discourse analysis theorysystems include language modal,text modal,action modal,video modal,images modal,etc.Many experts and scholars have carried out various researches in this field ofmulti-modal discourse analysis,covering many aspects and having a great influence,bothat home and abroad.With the rapid development of this theory,researchers have foundthat these multi-modal symbols can be used in language classroom teaching.Nowadaysevery level of school whether secondary or primary attaches importance to the demand formore effective English teaching and learning.

On the one hand,in recent years,in an era of rapid development of the internet wave,people have more ways to access information through various convenient means.Linguistic symbols are no longer the only way for people to convey information andcommunicate with each other.People often achieved through non-verbal symbols(animation,color,images,audio,video,etc.).The development of multi-modal teaching isthe inevitable requirement of era.On the other hand,National English CurriculumStandards(2017 edition and 2020 revised)released by the Ministry of Education explicitlystates that English teachers should develop curriculum resources and expand learningchannels in their teaching:The general senior secondary English curriculum should focuson changes in teaching and learning modals in the context of modern informationtechnology,make full use of information technology,according to the characteristics ofEnglish learning in the environment,promote the deep integration of informationtechnology with the curriculum.

1.2 Research purpose

According to the current situation of the domestic researches,based on languagemeta-functions from Systemic Functional Linguistic theory and attitude system ofappraisal theory,this thesis aims to investigate the status quo of multi-modal lead-in insenior high school English classroom teaching.This thesis provide a comprehensiveanalysis of multi-modal teaching in lead-in so as to supplement researches on multi-modal discourse analysis.The investigation is made in a senior high school in Yongfeng,Jiangxiprovince.The relevant data is collected and analyzed through classroom observation andquestionnaire.The specific purposes are as follows:

Firstly,the thesis tends to investigate the current situation of multi-modal teaching insenior high school English classroom through 30 samples of senior high school Englishclassroom teaching and questionnaires for students.

Secondly,to further explore the ideational and interpersonal function which areachieved in multi-modal lead-in teaching,This thesis discussed and analyzed the differentlead-in modals used by teachers from these two dimensions.
