1.2 The word-for-word translation and the literal translation of advertisement translation
It may be useful to distinguish from word-for-word translation and literal translation. Word-for-word translation transfer
advertising grammar and word order,as well as the primary meaning of all the advertising words into the translation,and it is normally effective only for brief neutral sentences. The words are translated simply according to their commonest meaning. The literal translation refers to coincide with the original,but not absolutely coincide. Word-for-word translating is too rigid,but the literal translation is not.
But literal translation in the advertising translation may sometimes become a merchanical translation. Turning English words into Chinese or turning Chinese into English we must consider the words order and sentence construction. Sometimes,if we respect the words order and sentence construction, we will make some mistakes. Such as the following advertisement.
There is an advertisement of a barber’s “women can indeed go bold!” If we use literal translation,it may becomes “女子确实也会秃头”。I think, if the consumers see this advertisement,they will be confused. But an intelligent man may understand this as “谁说女子不秃头”。He used liberal translation,so it can clearly told the consumer what kind of service they will provide. So when a literal translation achieves no effect and makes the version awkard and difficult to understand,we may have recourse to a liberal translation so that the target language can be understand and appreciated by the reader through the source language with the development of advertisement,the types of advertisement are becoming more and more popular,so if we want to get a perfect translation,we should not only use literal translation,but also use liberal translation. Advertisement is a commercial activity. As a result,attracting consumers is very important. Coca cola is well known in our country “can’t beat the real thing ”,if we use literal translation,it can be translated as “别打掉真正的东西”。But if we use liberal translation,it will be rendered as “挡不住的诱惑”。In my opinion,the second one is better.
2. Liberal translation
Liberal translation is also called free translation,because it does not adhere strictly to the form or word order of the original. When there exist dissimilarities or great differences between English and Chinese in the sequence of vocabulary. In grammatical structure and artistic devices, liberal translation should be employed. For example:
(a) Essence of living beings,energy for life:
This is an advertisement of “Tai yang sheng oral liquid”. It can be rendered as “汲取生命精神,焕发生命潜能”。The two imperative sentences are replaced with two noun phrases the “essence of living beings” and the “energy for life”.
