Chapter II Dilemmas and Redemption of George inSpace
2.1 Oppression and Escape in Physical Space
As one of the main characters in the novel,George’s fate and predicament areclosely related to the physical space in which he lives.George was born into aclergyman’s family in the Great Wyrley,England.George’s father,Shapurji, was thelocal vicar, which should have been a highly respected profession. But on the contrary,George and his family were not treated with kindness and respect, despite the fact thatGeorge’s father and mother had always served the local people and helped themselflessly. And it all had to do with George’s Indian heritage.George grew up in anoppressive environment. The different locations and places in the novel, such as thevicarage where he grew up,and the prison where he was imprisoned, all revealed theoppression and suffering that George endured, and therefore George tried to escapefrom his predicament through the transfer of the physical space and realize the redemption of his life.
2.1.1 Vicarage:A Place of Discipline and Isolation
George’s father,Shapurji, succeeded his uncle Compson on his death andbecame the new vicar of the Great Wyrley. And then George was born and raised inthe vicarage. The vicarage was not just a place for George to live when he wasgrowing up;for him,the house symbolized authority and discipline from his parents.“Inside the Vicarage, everything is quiet. There are prayers, books, needlework.Youdo not shout, you do not run,you do not soil yourself”(Barnes 7).
2.2 The Dilemmas in Social Space
Lefebvre pointed out that“(Social)space is a(social)product”(Lefebvre 26).He also believed that“A second implication is that every society-and hence everymode of production with its subvariants(i.e.all those societies which exemplify thegeneral concept—produces a space, its own space”(Lefebvre 31).Social spaceaccommodates the social relations between people. On the one hand, the relationshipbetween physical space, social space and mental space is inseparable,so the analysis of the plight of characters in social space often relies on specific physical space. Therefore, social space is closely related to certain concrete places that accommodatesocial relations. In the novel, the social space in which George lives is an importantreason for George’s survival dilemma.
2.2.1 Isolation and Prejudice in the White-dominated Society
Social space includes relationships between different groups. From thedescription of George in the novel,it is easy to learn about George’s Indian origins. His father,Shapurij, came from faraway Bombay, married an English woman fromScotland and succeeded his dead uncle Compson as a new priest. It is well known thatthe British invaded India in the 17th century, and after 1757,India was graduallycolonized by the British. Therefore, the British had absolute authority over the Indianswho came from the colony.Being of mixed British and Indian heritage,George’sdifferent skin color from that of the British would undoubtedly be raciallydiscriminated against by those around him.Living in a society where the order isdominated by whites,George faces isolation and prejudice from the white race.
