John Williams(1922-1994)was born in 1922 in rural East Texas,and his familyhad been farmers for three generations.Williams loved to write as a child and showeda talent for literary creation in his youth.After dropping out of college,Williamsworked for several newspapers and radio stations in the southwestern United States.At the outbreak of World War II,Williams enlisted in the United States Air Force andserved in India and Myanmar for two and a half years.After the war,he moved toColorado.He enrolled in the University of Denver for further studies,obtaining amaster’s degree,and then pursued a doctorate at the University of Missouri.Aftergraduating,Williams taught on campus for more than 30 years,devoting himselfalmost entirely to teaching for the rest of his life.In 1994,Williams died ofrespiratory failure at his home in Arkansas.At the time of his death,Williams had notyet completed his fifth novel.

John Williams published four novels and two collections of poetry throughouthis life.The four novels are Nothing but the Night(1948),Butcher’s Crossing(1960),Stoner(1965),and Augustus(1972).Augustus also won the National Book Award forFiction.The two poems are“The Broken Landscape”(1949)and“The Necessary Lie”(1965).
