Edgar Lawrence Doctorow,a Russian American,was born in 1931 into a Jewish family.Because of his liberal family environment and his obsession with books,he often dreamed ofbecoming a famous writer when he was a child.After graduating from high school in 1948,he went to Kenyon College in Ohio to study philosophy and literature.Doctorow has won thePulitzer Prize,the Edith Wharton Prize,the National Book Award,the Book CriticsAssociation Award and other major literary awards in the United States.His novels have aremarkable post-modernist style.On the one hand,he breaks the traditional linear narrativestructure;on the other hand,a variety of themes are integrated into each work.Comparedwith other American post-modern writers,Doctorow not only has the common characteristicsof post-modern novelists,but also his personal style is unique,and each work has its owncharacteristics.One called him a“radical Jewish humanist”(Harpham 81).He was proud of it and once told an interviewer,“If I don’t belong to this tradition,I must apply to join it.”Atthe same time,his bold expressive techniques,most typically his constant experimentationwith narrative techniques,the interplay of multiple voices,the mixing of fact and fiction,thefusion of collage,imitation,montage and foreshadowing,“unclassifiability that obscures theopposition between realism and experimentalism”(73),is widely regarded as a symbol ofDoctorow.There are only a few researches on Doctorow in the domestic study.Most of themare Chinese famous literature researchers,such as Yang Renjing,Wang Shouren and ZhangChong,who focuses more on the themes,aesthetic principles and artistic styles of the writers,or analyzes his works by combining the views of foreign authorities,and studies them fromhistorical and political perspectives,as well as from the perspectives of truth and fiction.

1.2 Marcuse’s Social Criticism

Herbert Marcuse(1898-1979)is the representative theorist of Frankfurt School ofcontemporary Western Marxism.He found the basis of social critical theory from Marxistphilosophy,constructing his human-centered social critical theory by reinterpreting Marx’salienation of labor from labor and products,labor and men and from laborers themselves.From Heidegger’s existentialist philosophy,he absorbed the human-centered ontologicalthought,focusing on the question of the nature of human beings,and turned from a grandphilosophical vision to a specific philosophy.He emphasized the totality and negation ofHegel’s philosophy of history,and set up a theoretical banner for criticizing the“one dimensional”trend of the developed industrial society.He also absorbed Freud’s idea of“repressive civilization”,putting forward the“non-repressive”civilization form,and outlinedthe picture of future society.He supplemented Marxism with Freud’s theory,criticizing thedeveloped society with deep psychological analysis,pointing out a feasible“Great Refusal”“New Sensibility”for people through the criticism of the repressive psychologicalmechanism and the call to love.
