Ragtime represented Doctorow’s fourth novel and signifies a significant breakthrough inhis career as it intricately weaves together history and music(59).In this work,Doctorowchallenged the conventional form,structure,and narrative subject of traditional novels byseamlessly blending fictional characters with real ones,thereby blurring the boundaries ofliterary genres.Through masterful interplay between ragtime music and montage lenses,readers were immersed in an enchanting experience that oscillates between“change andunchanged”“conflict and harmony,”among other contrasting elements.The powerful andsyncopated rhythms of ragtime effortlessly merged with the vibrant atmosphere of early20th-century Good Times characterized by boundless optimism and exuberance.Theemergence of various issues stemmed from the relentless advancement of capital andtechnology that tends towards a one-dimensional society that restricts personal boundariesand public space while suppressing individual transcendence and negation.In an environmentwhere personal living space overlapped with public space,all aspects of human life becameone-dimensional.Critical thoughts of people were transformed into mechanical tools amidstthe absence of identity and self-ambiguity.Therefore,this thesis employed Marcuse’s socialcritical theory along with Benjamin’s theory of mechanical reproduction to explore thesocietal problems depicted in Ragtime alongside their primary factors.
