Williams highlights distinct characters in his creations while emphasizing theirgrowth and development.In Stoner,Williams focuses on the protagonist,depicting hisarduous journey of growth and his determination to develop toward realizing himself.Based on Jung’s archetypal theory,this thesis analyzes Stoner’s three archetypes:persona,shadow and anima.Archetypes exist in the individual’s spiritual worldthrough heredity,embodying the crystallization of ancient human wisdom andconnecting to the individual’s roots.Whether or not a person is aware of it,they willinadvertently display certain archetypes.Williams realized the varying livingconditions of individuals in the evolving society.Therefore,he borrowed Stoner’ssuffering and torment in life to express his concern for individual growth.He alsodemonstrated his yearning and pursuit of a better spiritual world.

The realizing self is closely related to the development of archetypes.Stoner’slife may appear ordinary,but influenced by the archetypes of persona,shadow andanima,it has experienced numerous ups and downs.Firstly,Stoner regards thepersona as his true self,which makes it difficult to recognize his inner thoughts.Stoner initially failed to recognize his thoughts due to the deception of the persona.When a person is deceived by the persona that society demands of him to integrateinto society,he will obsessively develop in the direction exhibited by the persona.This not only causes individuals to lose their sense of self but also leads to a mistakenperception of themselves.Stoner initially fails to recognize his thoughts under thedeception of his persona,which is formed by the combined influence of family andsociety.Secondly,Stoner’s inner shadow makes him aloof and suspicious of others,distancing him from his family and friends.His inner desire drives him to violateethics,influenced not only by external temptations and inner desires but also byStoner’s attempt to escape from social issues.Finally,the acquisition of Stoner’s earlyexperiences and the condemnation of social morality affect his relationships with thetwo women,revealing Stoner’s cowardice in his actions and behavior.
