Chapter One INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

The title of a literary book is crucial.For people,the eyes are the window to thesoul.For books and articles,the titles are the facade and advertisements which are thefirst stimuli that greet the eyes of readers and make readers have the desire to read.The title of a literary book,determined by the writer after much deliberation,reflectsthe content of the original text,sums up the original text’s spirit and attracts thereaders’attention.Whether translators manage to translate literary book titles affectswhether the spirit and ideas of the original text can be accurately conveyed in thetarget language.For example,the title As I Lay Dying rendered into“在我弥留之际”is not only a summary of the content of the poem but also contains strong literarycolor,which is far better than the literal translation“当我躺在那等死的时候.”Thetranslation of literary book titles,however,is difficult and is different from thetranslation of contents for literary book titles are often highly condensed words,phrases or short sentences involving different cultural and social factors,whichrequire the translator’s a high level of translation.

On May 20,2021,the author was fortunate to participate in Li Yao’s lecture“How to Make Literary Translation Enter the‘Freedom’?”which benefited the authora lot.In the course of the lecture,Li Yao started with the“equivalence of words,”“equivalence of idioms”and“equivalence of allusions,”explaining how to maketranslation enter“the kingdom of freedom.”During this process,the author found that Li Yao used different translation strategies and translation methods when translatingEnglish book titles into Chinese.How do translators play their initiative whentranslating the titles of literary books?Has the initiative been restricted by factors?Allof this is worthy of thinking about and digging into.

1.2 Research Significance

The important implications of this thesis are as follows:

Firstly,this study highlights the important position of translators.Even today,thestatus of translators is not as high as it should be,and the status of translators remainslow in terms of scholarship,remuneration,etc.Through this thesis,the difficultsituation and the current status of translators can be considered by more people.

Secondly,this thesis generates fresh insight into the study of the translation ofliterary book titles,combining the translator’s subjectivity with the translation ofliterary book titles,which is conducive to producing decent translations of literarybook titles.The approach to studying translation of literary book titles has beeninnovative with the introduction of qualitative research methods.

Thirdly,the research on the theory of the translator’s subjectivity is enrichedbecause this thesis provides a systemic review of the changes of the translator’s statusand the evolution of the translator’s subjectivity in Western and Chinese translationhistory and discusses the connotation of the translation subject,the translationsubjectivity and the intersubjectivity of translation.
