Chapter OneAlienation of Physical Space
A.The Isolated Island:Disordered Eden
Lord of the Flies locks its perspective in the future. In order to escape the atomicwar of civilized mankind,a group of children were shot in a plane and crash-landed on apristine coral island like Eden, where the survivors spontaneously formed a democraticcommunity in the absence of adults. The location of the novel is quite meaningful, andsuch a spatial background is a typical setting of desert island literature. What is therelationship between Lord of the Flies and the traditional desert island fiction? Is thephysical space of the island in Lord of the Flies the same as that in traditional desertisland fiction? Is the isolated island a new Eden?
Desert island fictions, such as Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe,Robert MichaelBallantyne’s The Coral Island and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, sharecharacteristics that are very different from other novels, from the setting of the story tothe plot and the creative ideas. In terms of setting, this type of novel uses the desertisland as a specific space to unfold the story. As far as the plot is concerned, the three steps that make up the main plot of a desert island novel are being stranded on a desertisland for some reason that is beyond one’s will, having a strange experience on theisland, and finally being unexpectedly rescued and returned to human society. As for theguiding ideology of creation, desert island fictions generally make the scope ofcharacters’activities detached from the complex environment of the real society, reducing life to a level that can be easily grasped and handled, thus opening up a worldwhere the author is free to explore the mode of survival and human nature with his ownlife feelings and imagination in the absence of civilized moral norms and in isolationfrom society.
B.Piggy and Simon:Pathological Space of Bodies
The alienation of physical space in Lord of the Flies is manifested not only in theenvironment, but also in the alienation of the characters’bodies.Among this group ofchildren,Piggy and Simon are particularly special. As well as being British teenagerswho, like the other children on the island, are stranded on a desert island in a future war, they have another awkward and unpleasant status:they are all patients.Illness is alesion of the body.To some extent,it can be understood as the alienation of the body.
Why does this kind of alienation occur?According to Susan Sontag3,“Illness is thenight-side of life,a more onerous citizenship.Everyone who is born holds dualcitizenship,in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick.Although we allprefer to use only the good pass-port,sooner or later each of us is obliged,at least for aspell,to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place”(Sontag 3).It is a kind ofmoral judgement to treat illness as a punishment for evil.In the Western Middle Ages,“in the opinion of the Church, all physical ailments and manifestations of all kinds ofspiritual disorders,as well as despair, madness, insensitivity, etc.,were not,as they wereclaimed, diseases in the scientific or medical sense, but in fact manifestations of the lossof soul or demonic possession as a result of punishment for original sin and other sins”(Yu 76本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
