Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Francine Prose and Blue Angel
Francine Prose(1947-)is an American novelist,short fiction writer,nonfictionwriter,and educator known for her satirical wit and commentary on human foibles.Prose was born on April 1,1947,in New York City.She grew up in Brooklyn andreceived her education there.Prose studied at Radcliffe College and obtained aBachelor of Arts degree in 1968.After obtaining her degree,Prose began writingnovels.Her debut novel,Judah the Pious,was published in 1973.In 1974,shepublished The Glorious Ones.The third novel,Marie Laveau,was published in 1977.The novel,Animal Magnetism,was published in 1978.In 1981,Prose’s novelHousehold Saints gained some fame.In 1997,a collection of novels titled GuidedTours of Hell was published.In 1998,another collection of short stories titled ThePeaceable Kingdom was published.
Prose’s works have received many honors,including the Rome Prize and theDayton Literary Peace Prize.Prose has written over ten highly acclaimed novels,including Bigfoot Dreams,Household Saints,Hunters and Gatherers,PrimitivePeople,and Guided Tours of Hell.Her works are scattered in The New Yorker,the Atlantic Monthly,GQ,and The Paris Review.She is a contributing editor for Harper’smagazine and writes articles regularly on art for the Wall Street Journal.Prose hasreceived numerous grants and awards,including a Guggenheim and a Fulbright.Shecurrently serves as a Director’s Fellow at the Center for Scholars and Writers at theNew York Public Library.She has taught at the Iowa Writers’Workshop,the SewaneeWriters’Conference,and Johns Hopkins University.She currently resides in NewYork City.
1.2 Mikhail Bakhtin and Carnivalization
Mikhail Mikhaiovich Bakhtin(1895-1975)was born on November 16,1895,inthe small town of Oryol in the southern province of Moscow.Bakhtin’s father,Mikhail Fedorovich,was an untitled nobleman whose lineage can be traced back tothe 14th century.Perhaps it was because of his noble origin that Bakhtin’s family waswell-educated,while also placing higher demands on the education and demands ofhis children.“Bakhtin’s parents tried their best to provide their children with the besteducation possible,including the influence of European culture and thought”(Clarkand Holquist 25-26).The education and influence during his childhood laid a solidfoundation for Bakhtin’s academic research throughout his life.However,from asecular perspective,Bakhtin and his family did not see his academic ideas becomingfamous overseas.In addition to education,in many other aspects of life,the familyfollowed common rules that were not different from other families.It is worthmentioning that the relationship between Bakhtin’s parents and children wasconstrained by etiquette,which shaped Bakhtin’s lukewarm character at one point.Just like Bakhtin’s lifelong relationship with others,neither overly close nor distant.

2.1 Carnivalized Characters
