In 1986, Grice introduced the principles of pragmatics relevance, and subsequently, French scholar Sperber and British scholar Wilson expanded and studied the concept of relevance based on Grice’s work. They published a seminal book titled Relevance: Communication and Cognition. In 1995, they introduced and revised a host of statements and concepts in terms of verbal human communication and presented underlying postulates of what is now known as “Relevance Theory” in the 2nd edition (Cruz, 2016). Gutt, a student of Sperber and Wilson, developed the Relevance Theory of Translation based on his teacher’s theory of relevance. Gutt’s Relevance Translation Theory is said to “almost revolutionize our understanding of translation” (Zhao, 1999: 276).  In 1991, he published the book “Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context”. And Gutt (2014) asserts that Relevance Theory alone is adequate, there seems to be no requirement for a separate comprehensive theory of translation. 

Sperber and Wilson proposed the Relevance Theory as a cognitive approach to study human language communication, Gutt extensively applied this theory in the process of translation. In translation, the application of explicit and inferential elements is crucial (Liu, 2023). The most crucial aspect of the human brain’s communicative mechanism is the ability to infer based on people’s behavior. The process of translation is an interlingual communicative act. Buhler (2011) believes language embraces three important communication functions—expression, representation, and appeal. This also implies that, in a sense, the primary function of language is communication.

2.2 Application of Relevance Translation Theory

The interaction between theory (systematic rational understanding) and practice is innate and does not depend on human will, and the relationship between translation theory and translation practice is no exception (Cao, 2019). Once the author’s intent is clearly understood, the translator should adapt flexibly and make a scientifically sound translation based on the cognitive abilities and language habits of the target readers.  

Relevance Translation Theory finds numerous significant applications in translating literary texts. It emphasizes the relevance of information and the cognitive efforts of the reader, aiding the translator in ensuring the fluidity of the narrative and emotional expression while conveying the essence of the source language. In biographical text, the text possesses a distinctive personal style, and therefore, the translator deduces the author’s intent by applying the theory of relevance translation. Furthermore, this text is imbued with the author’s own emotions and emotional expressions. Relevance Translation Theory underscores the conveyance of emotional information and its connection to the reader. Therefore, the translator should strive to preserve the emotions and tone found in the source text in the translation, allowing readers to empathize with the characters and the story. Given that Relevance Translation Theory highlights the relationship between the author and the readers, a translator should make an effort to retain the author’s voice and unique style while considering the needs of the target readers.
