Chapter One Translation Task Description

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

(1)Information about the source text.

It is a self-initiated translation practice based on self-selected English material,PoliticalTheory and Australian Multiculturalism,written by renowned Australian author Jeffry BramLevy in 2008.This book deals mainly with the political system of Australia.Australianmulticulturalism is based on two political theories,one individualistic and rights-based andthe other collectivist(or republican)and pragmatic,both of which are compatible with liberaldemocratic traditions.It creates a political framework within which rights to culturalexpression and non-discrimination are honoured and cultural diversity is valued as a publicgood.The content of this translation activity is selected from the first chapter of PoliticalTheory and Australian Multiculturalism:multicultural political thought from the perspectiveof Australia.

The source text focuses on the purpose of exploring multiculturalism,explains theorigins and development of multiculturalism,compares the differences betweenmulticulturalism and other political theories,and critically examines the challenges,possibilities and limitations of multiculturalism as a concept of governance in liberal democracies with a special focus on the case of Australia.And finally,it summarizes thecontent of each chapter of the book.

1.2 Characteristics of the Translation Task

This text belongs to the informative text.The language in the text is rigorous in formand logical in meaning.So the translator needs to clarify the logical order of the text,andadjust the word order according to the logical order.Like the most English text,there are anumber of long sentences in this chapter,which is a great challenge for me,and most of thelong sentences are compound sentences.Long sentences are difficult to translate because itnot only has the large number of modifiers,but also has the nested compound sentences.Forshort modifiers,the translator will translate into prepositive attributives in Chinese;as for thelong modifiers,the translator will choose to split the long sentence into separate simplesentences.In the case of nested compound sentences,the translator rearranges the originalsentence structure according to logical meaning,then translate them into Chinese.I analyzesthe characteristics of the informative text.

The Characteristics of Informative Text:In English-Chinese translation,the translationof long and difficult sentences has always been a headache for translators,especially ininformative texts.However,the style of informative text is reflected by all kinds of long anddifficult sentences,which is an unavoidable difficulty in the practice of informative texttranslation.Therefore,the translation of long and difficult sentences is a great challenge tothe translator's practice of communicative translation theory.
