4.1 Unfamiliar Information

According to Daniel Gile (1995: 274), the Effort Model process for consecutive interpreting is expressed as CI=L+N+M+C, among which L represents listening and analysis, M refers to short-term memory operation, P represents speech production, C represents coordination, and N refers to note-taking. The more information the interpreter needs to handle, the more pressure one will have. With more preparation before interpreting, the interpreter can have a smaller workload for the above sectors. 

Li Wei (2009: 594-602) divided the preparation before interpreting into short-term preparation and long-term preparation. Long-term preparation includes listening practice, knowledge accumulation, and coordination practice. For the short-term preparation, he mentioned knowledge preparation for the meeting topic, preparation for technical terms, information about the speaker, understanding of the audience, familiarity with operation equipment and environment, as well as preparation for interpreting tools, and psychological preparation. In this practice, the interpreter did well preparation before interpreting, including relevant information about the topic and technical terms. The interpreter also went through all the slides given by the professor in the early morning. Even with the full preparation above, the interpreter still faced some challenges due to unfamiliar information during interpreting. In the following parts, the interpreter will analyze the reasons for the challenges, summarize the on-site strategy for this practice, and try to provide some advice for improvement in the future.

Conclusion

The author served as an interpreter between Chinese postgraduate students and Filipino professors for a Doctor of Education (EdD) project held by the University of Baguio in the Philippines. In this interpreting practice, the interpreter applied the interpreter’s subjectivity and adopted omission and generalization to overcome the difficulties faced in the task. Besides, the interpreter should improve self-monitored competence to reduce unnecessary fillers in the output in order to promote interpreting quality. 

After reviewing the original text and original version, the author finds out that the interpreter’s subjectivity is manifested during the whole process of interpreting. Especially for class interpreting of social philosophy, the professor would illustrate examples and add more information to deliver the class. Therefore, it is unavoidable that the interpreter will encounter some unfamiliar information. The interpreter should keep in mind the purpose of the interpreting project and apply omission to some information under the analysis with subjectivity. It is proven that bilingual competence is quite important for an interpreter. In daily practice, the interpreter should grasp as much information in all the fields to reduce the pressure of analysis and memory during interpreting. 

In the class of Social Philosophy, when the professor wanted to add further details, redundancy would occur. It requires the interpreter to note down the key information and use generalization to provide a concise interpreting.
