1.1Background Information of the Translation Task

This translation practice material provides a detailed overview of the achievements madeby Longhu District of Shantou City in various aspects such as economy,politics,culture,andlivelihood in the year 2022.It also highlights the work plans and priorities for the district in2023.Shantou City,as a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province,is one of the six major economic special zones in China.It has a highly developed privateeconomy and a large population of overseas Chinese,making it one of the mostrepresentative cities in China.Among the economic special zones in Shantou City,LonghuDistrict is the most developed area,consistently ranking first in GDP for many years.Forexample,in 2022,the annual GDP of Longhu District reached 61.437 billion yuan,accounting for around 20%of the city’s total GDP.Additionally,the district has witnessed theconcentrated development of commerce,tourism,and cultural industries,with several populartourist attractions attracting a large number of visitors.

Despite the commendable performance of Longhu District and even Shantou City on thenational stage,there are still deficiencies in their external publicity efforts.The translation oftheir government work reports is almost nonexistent.Therefore,the translator has chosen thistranslation material with the aim of showcasing the government’s work achievements ofLonghu District in Shantou City and raising awareness about this region.Furthermore,thetranslator seeks to explore and demonstrate translation techniques for handlingChinese-to-English government work reports,providing a reference for other translatorsengaged in translating regional government work reports.

1.2Translation Process

In this part,the translator will demonstrate the translation from the perspective ofpre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.

1.2.1 Pre-translation

Before commencing the translation,the translator undertook thorough pre-translationpreparations,which are outlined below:

Firstly,the translator conducted extensive research to gain a comprehensiveunderstanding of the local context and utilized various sources such as newspapers,newsarticles,books,and the official government website to gather information about the culture,politics,and other relevant aspects of Shantou City,with a specific focus on Longhu District.This enabled the translator to familiarize himself with the recent work priorities and key areasof focus for the Longhu District government.Additionally,as a resident of Shantou City,thetranslator also visited local attractions,including the Shantou Ma Island Scenic Area,to gainfirsthand knowledge of the local culture and customs,thereby ensuring accuratecomprehension of the local information.
