3.1 Translation of Words with Chinese Characteristics

Words with Chinese characteristics have consistently been a prominent element ingovernment work reports,characterized by its extensive coverage,strong temporal relevance,and distinctive nature(Long&Zhou,2011:45).These words possess significant culturalconnotations(Bi,2015).Over forty English translations of words with Chinese characteristics,sourced from international journals such as Time and The Economist,can be broadlycategorized into internet neologisms,socio-economic-cultural vocabulary,policy andinstitutional terminology,as well as Chinese idiomatic expressions(Xing&Gan,2014:40).In the government report,the words with Chinese characteristics primarily fall into severalcategories,including numerical abbreviations,and political,economic and culturalexpressions with Chinese characteristics,leading to the decision to analyze these two types ofwords with Chinese characteristics.The two translation techniques,including literaltranslation and literal translation with annotation,were applied.Consequently,the targetlanguage readers can not only comprehend the inherent meanings but also experience theauthentic cultural essence of the source language(Cheng&Zhang,2021:132).

Conclusion

This practice report is based on Report on the 2022 Work of the Government of LonghuDistrict.During the translation process,the syntactic and lexical features of the original textwere thoroughly examined.In addition,the translator explored translation techniquesspecifically for translating government work reports from Chinese to English.

Firstly,the original text contains a significant number of Chinese characteristic words,including numerical abbreviations and political,economic,and cultural expressions withChinese characteristics.To faithfully convey the content of the original text,the translatoremployed translation techniques such as literal translation and literal translation withannotation to handle these characteristic expressions.This approach ensured the delivery of atranslation that is equivalent to the original text in both form and content.Secondly,theoriginal text consists of many complex sentences.The translator analyzed run-on sentencesand subject-less sentences and employed strategies such as combination,division,addition ofsubject and the change of voice to translate them,thereby ensuring that readers would notmisunderstand the intended meaning of the original text while reading the translation.
